No agenda

We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.

Based here vs. serves here

A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.

Where this comes from

Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.

THE GUIDE

This guide helps solo contractors, small business owners, and real estate investors in Winston County, Alabama understand their local financing options. It covers who qualifies, what documents you need, which local lenders and CDFIs actually serve this area, and what red flags to avoid. Origen Capital is a directory — we connect you with resources, we do not lend money or collect your personal information.

What Is Small Business Financing?

Business financing is money you borrow or receive to start, grow, or stabilize a business. It can come in several forms:

  1. 01**Term loans**

A lump sum you repay over a set period with interest. Good for equipment, renovations, or working capital.

  2. 02**Lines of credit**

A flexible amount you draw from as needed. Good for covering slow seasons or unexpected costs.

  3. 03**Microloans**

Smaller loans, often under $50,000, offered by nonprofits and community lenders. A strong fit for solo contractors and very small businesses.

  4. 04**SBA-backed loans**

Loans made by local banks and credit unions where the U.S. Small Business Administration guarantees part of the risk. This makes lenders more willing to work with borrowers who have limited collateral or shorter credit histories.

  5. 05**Grants**

Free money from government or nonprofit sources. Harder to get, but worth researching, especially for rural or minority-owned businesses.

Who Qualifies? Local Economic Context

Forget what the banks say.

Winston County sits in the hill country of northwest Alabama, with a population of roughly 24,000. The local economy leans on forestry, agriculture, construction trades, small retail, and light manufacturing. Many business owners here are sole proprietors or family operations — not corporations.

General eligibility factors lenders consider:

  • Time in business (many lenders want 6–24 months; microloan programs are more flexible)
  • Credit score (some local CDFIs and ITIN-friendly lenders work with scores as low as 550–580)
  • Revenue and cash flow — can you show the business generates money?
  • Collateral — equipment, land, vehicles, or inventory you could put up
  • Business plan or clear description of how the loan will be used

Good news for Winston County applicants:

Because Winston County is a federally designated rural area, borrowers here often qualify for rural-specific programs through the USDA and Alabama-based CDFIs that set aside funds for exactly this type of community. You do not need to be a large business or have perfect credit to access these resources.

ITIN holders: If you do not have a Social Security Number but have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), you are not locked out. Several lenders and CDFIs in this region will work with ITIN-based applicants. See the lender section below.

Documents You Will Typically Need

Get your papers in order.

Gathering your paperwork before you apply saves time and shows lenders you are organized. Requirements vary by lender, but this list covers what most will ask for:

For all applicants:

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or consular ID)
  • ITIN or Social Security Number
  • 2–3 years of personal tax returns (or as many as you have)
  • 2–3 years of business tax returns, if the business has been open that long
  • 3–6 months of personal and business bank statements
  • Proof of business registration (DBA certificate, LLC documents, or sole proprietor filing)
  • A basic description of your business and how you plan to use the funds

For larger loans or SBA-backed loans, also expect:

  • A written business plan with financial projections
  • Profit and loss statement (your accountant or a SCORE mentor can help prepare this)
  • Balance sheet
  • Accounts receivable and payable aging reports
  • Collateral documentation — titles, deeds, equipment valuations

For real estate investors:

  • Property address and purchase contract or appraisal
  • Rental income history (if applicable)
  • List of existing properties owned

Tip: If you are missing some of these, do not wait. Contact a local CDFI or SCORE chapter first — they can help you prepare before you apply anywhere.

WHAT TO AVOID

Don't fall into these traps.

Not all lenders have your best interest in mind. Here are the warning signs that should make you pause and get a second opinion before signing anything.

Merchant Cash Advances (MCAs)

An MCA is not a loan — it is a purchase of your future revenue. The lender takes a percentage of your daily or weekly sales. The effective interest rate is often 60–300% annually. MCAs are legal in Alabama but almost never a good deal for a small business. Avoid unless you have exhausted every other option and have spoken with an advisor.

Triple-digit APR online lenders

Some online business lenders advertise fast approval and no collateral. Read the fine print. If the APR is above 36%, look for alternatives first. A CDFI or credit union may take a few more days, but the terms will be far better.

Upfront fee requests

Legitimate lenders do not ask you to pay an upfront fee to receive a loan. If someone asks you to wire money or pay a fee before your loan is funded, it is a scam.

Pressure and urgency

No legitimate lender will tell you the offer expires in 24 hours or that you must sign today. Good financing decisions take time. Walk away from anyone who pressures you.

Loan stacking

Taking multiple short-term loans from different lenders at the same time — called loan stacking — can trap you in a cycle of debt. Understand your total monthly obligations before taking on any new debt.

Deed or title transfers as loan security

In some predatory schemes, a lender will ask you to sign over the deed to your property as loan collateral in a way that gives them immediate ownership rights. Never sign any document transferring a title or deed without having an independent attorney review it first.

Questions to ask every lender:

1. What is the full APR?

2. Are there prepayment penalties?

3. What happens if I miss a payment?

4. Is this lender regulated by a federal or state banking authority?

Understanding Alabama's rules helps you know your rights and plan correctly.

Business Registration:

In Alabama, you must register your business with the Alabama Secretary of State if you operate as an LLC or corporation. Sole proprietors operating under a trade name (DBA) file at the county probate court — in Winston County, that is the Winston County Probate Office in Double Springs.

Alabama Privilege License:

Most businesses operating in Alabama need a state privilege license, renewed annually. Winston County also requires a local business license. Contact the Winston County Commission office in Double Springs for details.

Interest Rate Caps:

Alabama does not have a strong general usury cap for business loans, which means some lenders can legally charge very high rates. This is one reason it is important to work with regulated lenders — banks, credit unions, and CDFIs — rather than unregulated online lenders. Always ask for the APR (Annual Percentage Rate), not just the monthly payment.

Alabama Small Business Commission:

Alabama has a Small Business Commission that advocates for small businesses at the state level. While it does not provide direct financing, it can point you toward state-level grants and programs.

Tax ID and Licensing Checklist:

Federal EIN (Employer Identification Number) — free from IRS.gov, takes minutes

Alabama state tax registration — Alabama Department of Revenue, myalabamataxes.alabama.gov

Winston County business license — Winston County Commission, Double Springs

Rural Designation Benefits:

Winston County's rural designation opens access to USDA programs, certain HUD programs, and Alabama's rural enterprise zone incentives. When applying for any loan or grant, always mention that you are located in a rural county — it often unlocks additional eligibility.
