How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Lake County runs on steel, refining, freight and the trades that keep all three moving — and most of the people doing that work are paid as subcontractors, not employees. This guide explains what business financing actually is, who tends to qualify in a county like this one, which documents to have ready, and which institutions in our directory genuinely serve Lake County. It is honest about what the county does not have, names the traps that follow cash-heavy trades, and asks nothing of you in return.
It's a process, not a rejection.
Business financing is any money you borrow, draw on, or receive to start, run, or grow a business. It comes in a few basic shapes, and the shape matters more than the name:
- 01**term loan**
A fixed amount you repay on a schedule. Good for a truck, a trailer, a build-out.
- 02**line of credit**
An approved limit you draw from and pay back as work comes in. Good for payroll gaps.
- 03**microloan**
A smaller loan, usually from a nonprofit or credit union, built for new or thin-file businesses.
- 04**Equipment financing**
The machine itself is the collateral, so approval leans on the equipment rather than on years of history.
Forget what the banks say.
Lenders are asking four questions, in this order: can you repay, what does your borrowing history show, how long have you been doing this, and does the work make sense in this market. Nothing about that requires perfect credit or a Social Security Number.
What tends to qualify in Lake County:
- Trade subcontractors — drywall, concrete, roofing, electrical, HVAC — who work 1099 for general contractors and can show signed contracts or a steady run of deposits.
- Owner-operators in trucking and hauling with one tractor and a freight relationship, moving loads out of the rail and warehouse corridor.
- Plant and mill service work — industrial cleaning, scaffolding, welding, fabrication — where the customer list is short but the invoices are real.
- Storefront businesses in Hammond, East Chicago and Gary: restaurants, bakeries, barbershops, auto repair, tire shops, small groceries.
- Small landlords who buy, rehab and rent the county's older housing stock and run it as a business.
The honest complication here is seasonality and layoff cycles. Winter slows outdoor trades; plant work moves in waves.
A lender who understands this county will ask about your slow months rather than pretend they do not exist.
Bring that answer with you. If your credit file is thin or your business is under two years old, mission lenders and microloan programs are the realistic first door, not the last resort.

Get your papers in order.
Every institution has its own checklist, but this set covers most small-business applications in Indiana. Gathering it before you apply is the single biggest time-saver available to you:
- 01Government photo ID
Driver's license, passport, or consular identification
- 02ITIN or SSN
And an EIN for the business if you have one (the IRS issues EINs at no cost)
- 03Proof the business exists
Your Indiana entity filing, or an assumed business name filing if you operate as a sole proprietor
- 04Personal tax returns for the last two years
Including Schedule C if you file that way
- 05Business tax returns if the business files separately
- 06Three to six months of bank statements
Business accounts if you have them, personal if that is genuinely where the money lands
- 071099s your general contractors issued you
And any signed contracts, purchase orders or work agreements in hand
- 08Simple profit-and-loss summary
A one-page sheet you typed yourself counts as a start
- 09List of equipment
Vehicles and tools you could offer as collateral, with rough values
- 10Certificate of insurance
And any municipal contractor registration your city requires

Don't fall into these traps.
Cash-heavy trades attract expensive money. These are the patterns that show up here most often.
Not loans — a purchase of your future receipts at a steep discount, usually collected by daily or weekly withdrawals from your account. They are legal, they are fast, and the effective cost dwarfs anything a credit union would charge. Treat an MCA as an emergency tool, never a first plan.
Once you have one advance, brokers will call offering a second and a third. Each one takes its cut from the same daily receipts. Stacking is how a working business becomes an insolvent one in a single season.
A legitimate lender's fees come out of the funded loan. Large upfront fees, application fees on a loan you have not been approved for, or a wire request before closing are all reasons to hang up.
Read the buyout. A low monthly payment with a large balloon at the end can cost more than a straightforward loan on the same machine.
Public grant programs do not phone you, do not charge a processing fee, and never ask for a gift card or a wire.
No real lender needs your signature today. If the offer expires in an hour, the offer is the trap. Get two written quotes, read both, and ask someone you trust to read them too.
Everything below is set by Indiana, and it reads the same in every county in it. The 16 marks above are this county's own doors — who opens one is decided by them, not by the state.
The rules where you are.
A few state-level facts shape how a Lake County application goes.
Indiana entities — LLCs, corporations — register with the Secretary of State's business division. Sole proprietors operating under a trade name file an assumed business name, and in Indiana that filing is recorded at the county level, which for you means the Lake County recorder's office. Lenders check this. An unregistered business name is a common, avoidable reason an application stalls.
Apply directly to the IRS. Any service charging you a fee to obtain one is charging for something you can do yourself in a few minutes.
Indiana does not run a single statewide general contractor license; Hammond, Gary, East Chicago, Merrillville and the other municipalities set their own registration and bonding rules. A lender financing your equipment may ask to see whatever registration your city requires.
Indiana gives contractors and suppliers lien rights on work performed, which is part of how small shops get paid. Those rights run on a clock, and lien waivers you sign at each draw can give them away. Read what you sign on every payment application.
USDA Rural Development lends across Indiana, but most of Lake County's population lives in areas that do not qualify as rural. Ask about eligibility for your specific address before you build a plan around it. The state's economic development agency and the county and city economic development offices are the better call about local rehab, façade and small-employer programs.
The short version.
- 01
If you run a trade, a truck, a shop or a small rental operation in Lake County, you have real options — even though no bank in this directory is headquartered inside the county line.
- 02
Start with Profinance in Merrillville, the one CDFI-certified institution based here, then work through the other Lake County credit unions and the branch-tier offices. If you hold an ITIN rather than a Social Security Number, the national nonprofits above are verified to work with ITIN borrowers, and you are entitled to ask any institution the question directly.
- 03
Before you apply: register the business name, get the free EIN, pull two years of returns and six months of statements, and write one page explaining what you do and how the loan gets repaid. Then take the free hour with the SBDC or SCORE. It costs you nothing and it changes how your file reads.
- 04
Compare at least two written offers. Never let a deadline someone else invented decide what you sign.
