How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.

What Is Small Business Financing?
Small business financing is money borrowed or invested to start, run, or grow a business. It comes in several forms:
- 01**Term loans**
You borrow a fixed amount and repay it with interest over a set period of months or years.
- 02**Lines of credit**
A flexible pool of funds you draw from when needed and repay as you go. Good for managing cash flow between jobs or contracts.
- 03**Microloans**
Smaller loans, often under $50,000, designed for early-stage businesses or contractors who don't yet qualify for a traditional bank loan.
- 04**Equipment financing**
A loan or lease tied specifically to a piece of equipment (a truck, a saw, a compressor). The equipment itself often serves as collateral.
- 05**SBA-backed loans**
Loans made by local banks or CDFIs, with a federal guarantee that reduces the lender's risk. This means more borrowers can qualify, including newer businesses.

Forget what the banks say.
Newton County sits in southwest Missouri, anchored by Neosho (the county seat) and Joplin nearby. The local economy is built around manufacturing, agriculture, construction trades, logistics, and a growing number of small retail and service businesses. Many business owners here are solo operators or employ fewer than five people.
General qualification factors lenders look at:
- Time in business — most traditional lenders prefer at least one to two years; microloans and CDFIs may work with newer businesses
- Credit score — a score of 620 or higher opens more doors, but some CDFI and ITIN-based lenders work with thin or damaged credit
- Revenue and cash flow — lenders want to see that income covers the loan payment with room to spare
- Collateral — equipment, real estate, or inventory you own that can back the loan
- Business plan or financial projections — especially important for startups
If you don't have a Social Security Number: Some lenders in and around Newton County accept an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in place of an SSN. An ITIN does not affect your immigration status. Ask any lender directly whether they are ITIN-friendly before sharing personal information.
Farmers and agricultural operators in Newton County may have additional options through USDA Farm Service Agency programs, which are separate from standard small business loans.

Get your papers in order.
Gathering these documents before you approach a lender saves time and shows you are serious. Requirements vary by lender, but most will ask for some combination of the following:
For the business:
- Business license or registration from Missouri Secretary of State
- Two to three years of business tax returns (or one year if newer)
- Recent bank statements (last three to six months)
- Profit and loss statement and balance sheet
- Accounts receivable/payable list (if applicable)
- Contracts or letters of intent showing future work (helpful for contractors)
For the owner:
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or consular ID card)
- Social Security Number or ITIN
- Personal tax returns (last two to three years)
- Personal bank statements
For startups or newer businesses:
- Business plan with financial projections
- Resume showing relevant experience
- Any existing contracts, permits, or licenses in your trade
If you are missing some of these, a local CDFI or Small Business Development Center (SBDC) counselor can help you prepare before you apply. They do not charge for this help.

The doors worth knowing.
This is the most important section. Federal programs like SBA loans only reach you through a local institution.

BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing, and buying, repairing or refinancing a home.
Don't fall into these traps.
Not everyone offering business financing has your best interests in mind. Here are the warning signs to watch for in Newton County and anywhere in Missouri:
These are not loans — they are purchases of your future revenue. They often carry effective interest rates of 40% to 150% or higher. They are not regulated as loans in Missouri, and the contracts are often written to favor the funder heavily. Avoid MCAs unless you fully understand the factor rate and total payback amount.
Any lender who says an offer expires in 24 hours or pushes you to sign before you understand the terms is not acting in good faith. Legitimate lenders give you time to review.
Reputable lenders collect fees at closing, not before approval. If someone asks for a fee just to process or review your application, that is a red flag.
Some online lenders include language in their contracts that allows them to take legal judgment against you in another state without notifying you. These clauses are dangerous and difficult to fight. Read every contract carefully, or have someone at OzSBI or SBDC review it.
Any lender who cannot provide a physical address and proof of Missouri registration (or registration in another U.S. state) should be treated with suspicion.
It is normal for a small business lender to require a personal guarantee. It is not normal for them to require a personal guarantee AND a lien on your home AND a confession of judgment AND blanket collateral all at once for a small microloan. If collateral demands feel excessive, get a second opinion.
Be cautious of lenders or brokers who contact you through Facebook, WhatsApp, or Instagram promising fast approvals with no credit check. Start with a locally established organization like OzSBI or the SBDC instead.
The rules where you are.
Missouri has its own rules that affect small business borrowing. Here is what Newton County business owners should know:
Before a lender will take you seriously, your business needs to be registered with the Missouri Secretary of State's office. LLCs and corporations must file there. Sole proprietors operating under a trade name (DBA) should register with Newton County Clerk's office.
Missouri does not cap interest rates for most commercial loans, which means business loan rates are not regulated by state law the way some consumer rates are. This is one reason it's critical to compare offers and read every term carefully. The absence of a rate cap makes it easier for high-cost lenders to operate legally in Missouri — so comparison shopping is your main protection.
For loans of $500 or less, Missouri law provides some consumer protections, but these do not typically apply to business loans. Be cautious with any product that blurs the line between personal and business credit.
The Missouri State Treasurer's office operates a Linked Deposit Program that can lower interest rates on loans for qualifying businesses, including agricultural operations and businesses in underserved areas. Your lender must participate in this program. Ask your bank or SBDC advisor if it applies to your situation.
If you are a licensed contractor seeking financing, having your Missouri contractor's license current and in good standing strengthens your loan application. Licensing is handled through the Missouri Division of Professional Registration.
The short version.
- 01
If you are a small business owner or solo contractor in Newton County, Missouri, here is the short version of what you need to know:
- 02
1. Start locally. Call OzSBI in Neosho or the Missouri SBDC at Missouri Southern in Joplin before you apply anywhere. These free counselors will tell you what you qualify for and help you prepare your documents. They are not lenders, so they have no incentive to steer you wrong.
- 03
2. Know what you need the money for. A line of credit, a term loan, and a microloan are not the same thing. Matching the right product to your actual need saves you money.
- 04
3. ITIN borrowers are not excluded. If you use an ITIN, ask specifically about CDFI microloans and ITIN-friendly programs. You have options.
