No agenda

We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.

Based here vs. serves here

A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.

Where this comes from

Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.

THE GUIDE

This guide is for solo contractors, small business owners, and real-estate investors in Person County, North Carolina who want to understand their financing options. It walks you through what business financing is, who can qualify, what documents you'll need, and which local lenders and community organizations actually serve this area. We also cover North Carolina-specific rules and common traps to avoid so you can move forward with confidence and without pressure.

What Is Business Financing?

Business financing is money you borrow — or receive — to start, grow, or stabilize a business or investment property. It can come in many forms:

  1. 01**Term loans**

You borrow a fixed amount and repay it over time with interest. Good for equipment, vehicles, or property.

  2. 02**Lines of credit**

A flexible pool of money you draw from as needed and repay. Useful for managing cash flow between jobs.

  3. 03**SBA-backed loans**

Loans from local lenders that are partially guaranteed by the U.S. Small Business Administration. This reduces the lender's risk and often means better terms for you.

  4. 04**Microloans**

Smaller loans (often under $50,000) from nonprofits or CDFIs designed for newer or smaller businesses.

  5. 05**Grants**

Money you don't repay, usually tied to specific purposes like rural development or minority-owned businesses.

Who Qualifies in Person County?

Person County sits in north-central North Carolina, anchored by Roxboro. The local economy includes manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, construction trades, and a growing small-business corridor along Roxboro's Main Street area. Many residents work in skilled trades and operate as solo contractors or small crews.

Qualification depends on the lender and loan type, but general factors include:

  • Time in business – Most traditional lenders want 1–2 years of operating history. CDFIs and microloan programs are often more flexible and work with startups.
  • Credit score – Conventional lenders typically look for scores above 650. Community lenders may work with scores in the 580–640 range. Some ITIN-friendly lenders do not require a Social Security Number.
  • Revenue or income – Lenders want to see that your business or contracting income can cover loan payments. Bank statements, invoices, or tax returns help tell that story.
  • Collateral – Not always required, especially for microloans or SBA 7(a) loans under certain thresholds.
  • Residency or local ties – Some programs require that the business operates in or primarily serves Person County or the surrounding Piedmont region.

If you are undocumented or use an ITIN instead of a Social Security Number, you are not automatically disqualified. Several local and regional lenders work with ITIN borrowers — see Section 4.

Documents You Will Typically Need

Get your papers in order.

Getting your paperwork together before you apply saves time and shows lenders you are organized. The exact list varies by program, but plan to have:

Personal documents:

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or consular ID/matrícula)
  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or Social Security Number
  • Two years of personal tax returns (if available)
  • Two to three months of personal bank statements

Business documents:

  • Business bank statements (2–3 months minimum, 12 months preferred)
  • Business tax returns (1–2 years, if filed)
  • Profit-and-loss statement or income summary
  • Business license or registration with the NC Secretary of State
  • Contractor's license (if applicable — required in NC for general contracting work over $30,000)
  • Any existing leases, contracts, or purchase agreements relevant to the loan purpose

For real-estate investment loans:

  • Property address and purchase contract (if applicable)
  • Appraisal or estimated value
  • Rental income history or projected rent schedule

If you do not have all of these yet, a CDFI or nonprofit business advisor can help you build toward readiness — that is part of what they do.

WHAT TO AVOID

Don't fall into these traps.

Not every lender has your best interest in mind. Here are patterns to recognize and avoid:

Merchant Cash Advances (MCAs):

These are not loans — they are purchases of your future revenue. They often carry effective interest rates of 40%–150% or higher. They are frequently marketed to contractors and small business owners who have been turned down elsewhere. Avoid them unless you have exhausted all other options and fully understand the cost.

Online "Instant Approval" Lenders:

Some online platforms offer fast approvals with minimal documentation. Read the fine print carefully. Factor rates, origination fees, and daily repayment schedules can make these extremely expensive. A loan that looks like 10% interest may actually cost far more when fees are included.

Fee-First "Consultants":

Legitimate lenders and CDFIs do not charge large upfront fees to review your application or "guarantee" approval. If someone asks for hundreds or thousands of dollars before any loan is issued, walk away.

Pressure Tactics:

No reputable lender will tell you an offer expires in 24 hours or that you must decide today. Take your time. Talk to an advisor at Piedmont Community College's Small Business Center or SCORE before signing anything.

Unlicensed Lenders:

In North Carolina, lenders making consumer loans must be licensed by the NC Commissioner of Banks. You can verify a lender's license at nccob.gov. Commercial lenders have different rules, but the principle holds: do your homework.

Contract Signing Without Reading:

Always read the full loan agreement before signing. Ask for a plain-language explanation of the APR (annual percentage rate), total repayment amount, prepayment penalties, and what happens if you miss a payment. A trustworthy lender will answer these questions clearly.

North Carolina–Specific Regulatory Notes

The rules where you are.

Understanding state-level rules protects you and helps you work with reputable lenders.

Contractor Licensing

In North Carolina, any general contracting project valued over $30,000 requires a state license from the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors. Solo contractors working below that threshold must still comply with local Person County building permits. Working unlicensed above the threshold can void contracts and affect your ability to get financing.

Business Registration

If you operate under a name other than your own legal name, you must register a DBA ("Doing Business As") with the NC Secretary of State or Person County Register of Deeds. This is inexpensive and often required by lenders.

NC Consumer Finance Act

North Carolina has relatively strong consumer lending protections. State law caps interest rates on many consumer loans and prohibits certain predatory terms. However, commercial loans are less regulated — this is why choosing a reputable lender matters.

ITIN and NC Taxes

Using an ITIN, you can legally file North Carolina state taxes (NC Form D-400) and build a financial record that lenders can review. The NC Department of Revenue accepts ITINs.

NC IDEA and NC SBTDC

The NC Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) has regional offices serving the Piedmont and provides free financial analysis, loan packaging help, and referrals — available to Person County businesses at no cost.

Opportunity Zones

Parts of Person County are designated federal Opportunity Zones. Investment in these areas may qualify for tax incentives. Ask a CDFI or the NC Department of Commerce about how this applies to your project.
