That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 34 of North Dakota's 53 counties hold a door in this lane, and Cavalier County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Cavalier County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Cavalier County is farm and small-business country, and the financing here moves slower than a bank branch in Bismarck will tell you. You have working lenders: a local credit union network, the SBA's Fargo district office, and state-backed programs designed for people who don't fit the typical mold. This guide points you to the right doors in the right order.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Cavalier County, your loan officer knows your neighbor. That's the advantage. Banks in Williston or Grand Forks don't. A CDFI or local credit union will ask what you're building and why—not just whether your credit score hits their formula. Real estate and contracting deals here rest on history and reputation.
Start with people who see you as a person, not a data point.
That's how you get a yes when the national lender says no.

Forget what the bank chain say.
Big banks have gone quiet in rural North Dakota. They've closed branches, tightened terms, and stopped doing smaller construction loans.
They'll tell you they don't lend under $100,000 or they only take properties in metro areas.
That's not your ceiling—that's their choice. Credit unions, farm lenders, and SBA-backed programs actually compete for small-business deals out here. The interest rate might be a point higher, but you'll get an answer faster and a voice on the other end who remembers your name.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your numbers cold
Revenue, expenses, debt, and what you're borrowing for.
- 02Contact the Fargo SBA district office before you contact any lender.
They'll explain programs and connect you to SBA-preferred lenders who know how to write the loan.
- 03Talk to Cavalier County Economic Development or the local Chamber—they track which lenders are active right now.
- 04Apply to your credit union before you chase a CDFI.
Easier approval, lower fees, member-friendly terms.

Four doors worth knowing.
First: The Dakota Community Bank in Langdon is rooted in Cavalier County and works with small contractors and landowners.

BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business — with no social security number.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. National in reach and nonprofit in structure, which is why it can take an application from a county with no branch in it. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.
Don't fall into these traps.
Watch for three common mistakes: First, chasing a payday or title loan because a bank said no—those fees eat 20–30% of your money per year and trap you in debt. Second, borrowing from a contractor or material supplier at rates they don't even tell you until you miss a payment. Third, accepting a loan without reading whether early repayment costs extra or whether the rate is fixed. Ask the lender in writing: What is the APR? What are the total fees? Can I pay it off early without penalty? Don't sign until you have those answers on paper.
A "short-term business loan" at 18–30% APR for 90 days is a payday trap in business clothes; avoid it.
A loan broker who charges 2–3% upfront, then the lender charges 1%, then title and appraisal fees pile on top—you lose 5–6% before you borrow a dime.
A loan that starts low but adjusts upward after 12 months without a cap; your payment can jump 40% or more mid-term.
Everything below is set by North Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. North Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- BUSINESS TAX4.31%
What North Dakota charges on top of federal. It is the first thing a lender reconciles when your numbers do not match your tax return.
- CORPORATE INCOME TAX1.41% – 4.31%
It depends on how the business is registered. A sole proprietor almost never pays it — worth knowing which side of that line you are on before you apply.
- SALES TAX5.0% state · 2.0% avg local
What you collect on a job, and what your materials cost. It is the gap between a bid that holds and one that does not.
- WHERE THE MONEY IS HEREOil & Gas · Agriculture & Grain · Energy & Wind
North Dakota's three biggest sectors. A local lender reads your file against them — a trade that serves these is a trade they already understand.
