That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 20 of Nebraska's 93 counties hold a door in this lane, and Garfield County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Garfield County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Garfield County is rural, and big banks often ignore rural Nebraska. Your real options live at local credit unions, state-backed programs, and lenders who understand ITIN and non-traditional credit. This guide shows you the actual doors open to you and how to walk through them.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Garfield County, you are not a file number. The lenders who work here know their borrowers. A local credit union, a CDFI, or a state-backed rural lender will sit with you, understand your income (whether W-2, 1099, or self-employed), and build a loan around what you actually earn. Big banks want a standard box. Local lenders build the box around you. That difference is everything.

Forget what the banks say.
A national bank rejection does not mean you cannot borrow. Banks follow strict rules because they sell loans to investors. Local lenders keep loans on their books and can say yes to people banks say no to—ITIN holders, recent immigrants, self-employed contractors, people with thin or repaired credit.
If you were turned down at a big bank, you were turned down by one kind of lender.
You were not turned down by lending itself.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your income number
Whether you file taxes, claim self-employment, use an ITIN, or all of the above. Write it down.
- 02Check your credit report free at annualcreditreport
Com and fix obvious errors before you apply.
- 03Save for a down payment
Even if it is small; lenders respect skin in the game.
- 04Talk to a local credit union or CDFI before you talk to anyone else.
They will tell you what is possible, not what is impossible.

Four doors worth knowing.
Each door opens differently. Know which one fits you before you knock.

A CDFI — a mission lender, not a branch network. It is measured on who it reaches, which is why a thin file is not the end of the conversation.

Don't fall into these traps.
Rural Nebraska has real lending, but it also has people who prey on rural borrowers. Know the red flags. Know the cost before you sign. Know who you are borrowing from. If something sounds too good to be true, it is. If the terms are hidden until you sign, walk away. If you are being pushed to close fast, that is a warning.
A loan with a small monthly payment that hides a huge lump-sum payment at the end; if you cannot refinance when it comes due, you lose the house.
A broker adds layer upon layer of fees—origination, processing, underwriting, document prep—until your cost is far higher than direct lenders; always ask for a Loan Estimate from a direct lender to compare.
A lender or broker who rushes you to sign before you read the documents is protecting their profit, not your interest; legitimate lenders give you time.
Everything below is set by Nebraska, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 3 of the 9 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Nebraska sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- PROPERTY TAX1.63% effective
What Nebraska charges every year on what the house is worth. No lender sets it and it does not go away when the loan does — it is part of the payment from day one.
- MEDIAN HOME, STATEWIDE$244K
The number an appraisal gets read against. A house well under it is often the loan a big bank does not want — which is exactly what the doors above are for.
- STATE INCOME TAX2.46% – 5.84% (phasing to 3.99%)
It comes off before a lender works out how much of your income can go to a payment.
- COST OF LIVING91.5
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here than it does nationally.
