The doors in Bayfield County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Bayfield County has real options beyond big banks: local credit unions, community lenders, and state programs built for people with irregular income or thinner credit files. This guide walks you through the intermediaries who actually know your county and your situation. Start with a CDFI or credit union, then move toward conventional programs if you qualify.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
A home loan in Bayfield County is not the same as filling out an online form. The lenders who serve this county—credit unions, community development financial institutions (CDFIs), and local SBA partners—are built on knowing you, your business, and your ties to the region.
They care about your income story, not just a credit score.
If you've been turned down before, it was probably by a lender who had no reason to understand your work. The local intermediaries do.

Forget what the banks say.
National banks screen out self-employed people, contractors, and those with ITIN numbers using hard rules: they want W-2s or nothing. Local lenders in Bayfield County and across Wisconsin don't work that way. They look at bank statements, tax returns filed however you file them, cash flow, and references.
Many credit unions and CDFIs actively lend to people who fall outside bank guidelines.
If a loan officer at a big bank said no, that's information about that bank, not about you.

Three things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your local intermediary layer
The Bayfield County area is served by Northern Wisconsin credit unions, regional CDFIs, and the Madison SBA District office. Call them before you apply anywhere else.
- 02Gather your paper
Tax returns (even if filed as 1040-C), bank statements for two months, proof of income (letters from clients, contracts, invoices), and ID.
- 03Talk to at least two lenders
Rates, fees, and terms vary—and one lender's approval is not the only approval possible.

Three doors worth knowing.
Door One: Northern Wisconsin credit unions (Bayfield County area branches and affiliates) offer flexible underwriting and lower fees than conventional banks. They favor locals and are familiar with seasonal and self-employed income.

Based in Superior, Wisconsin. A credit union — owned by its members rather than by shareholders, which is exactly what changes the conversation after a bank has said no.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing, and buying, repairing or refinancing a home.
Don't fall into these traps.
Stay clear of lenders who quote you a rate over the phone without seeing documents—that rate will jump when they review your file. Avoid loan brokers who charge upfront fees before you have a formal offer letter; if they vanish, you've lost money and time. Never accept a loan that requires you to put a large down payment into the lender's account before closing; legitimate lenders hold escrow money in a third-party account. And don't rush: a real lender will take 3–6 weeks to review your application. Pressure to decide in days is a red flag.
A lender quotes you 4.5% to get you in the door, then raises it to 6% when they see your tax returns; always get a rate lock in writing.
A mortgage broker or loan officer asks for $500–$2,000 upfront 'to pull your credit' or 'process your application'; legitimate lenders charge this at closing, not before.
Loan terms bury a clause that penalizes you for paying off the loan early; read the full note and promissory agreement before signing.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Wisconsin sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- PROPERTY TAX1.51% effective
What Wisconsin charges every year on what the house is worth. No lender sets it and it does not go away when the loan does — it is part of the payment from day one.
- MEDIAN HOME, STATEWIDE$265K
The number an appraisal gets read against. A house well under it is often the loan a big bank does not want — which is exactly what the doors above are for.
- STATE INCOME TAX3.5% – 7.65%
It comes off before a lender works out how much of your income can go to a payment.
- COST OF LIVING95.1
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here than it does nationally.
