No institution is headquartered inside the Denali Borough line.
That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 14 of Alaska's 30 counties hold a door in this lane, and Denali Borough is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Denali Borough.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Denali Borough is remote and rural, which means big banks ignore you but local credit unions and state-backed programs don't. You have real options through Alaska Native corporations, community development lenders, and the SBA's Anchorage district office. Start with your credit union or a state microloan program before you touch a payday lender.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Denali Borough, you're not a credit score to a bank—you're a neighbor to a credit union or a business case to a CDFI. Traditional banks see your isolation and thin credit file as risk.
Lenders who know Alaska see your resilience and local ties as strength.
Building a relationship with one lender—especially one based in state or one that serves Alaska Native communities—means they'll stand by you through seasonal income swings and weather delays. That relationship becomes your collateral when spreadsheets won't.

Forget what the banks say.
Big banks will tell you that you need perfect credit, a 20% down payment, and six months of bank statements to prove you exist. Forget it. The SBA's Anchorage district office runs programs that accept lower credit scores and let you put down 10% or less.
Alaska credit unions weigh your employment history and community standing alongside your FICO.
CDFIs that work with Alaska Native entrepreneurs will look at cash flow from your contracting work, not just W-2s. And if you're working under an ITIN, there are lenders in this state who know the paperwork and won't treat you like a stranger. The first 'no' from a bank doesn't mean no everywhere.

Three things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your actual credit score and what's dragging it down—run a free report at annualcreditreport.com.
- 02
Write down your last two years of income or business revenue (tax returns, contractor invoices, whatever you have) so you can show cash flow, not just paystubs.
- 03Call your nearest credit union or the SBA office and ask what programs they have *right now* for your situation—don't assume.
These three steps take a weekend and save you months of chasing dead ends.

Three doors worth knowing.
Door one: Denali Community Health Center's credit union or a regional Alaska credit union (like Kenai Peninsula Federal Credit Union or Northrim Bank's community lending) will lend to locals with thinner files and fair credit.

Based in Wasilla, Alaska. A community development financial institution, certified by the U.S. Treasury to lend where a bank will not, and used to a file that is not clean.
BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Juneau, Alaska. Treasury-certified as a CDFI, which is a mandate rather than a courtesy: reaching borrowers the mainstream market passes over is the job. It lends SBA microloan money.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business, and community lending where a bank has already said no.Based in Tukwila, Washington. Approved by the SBA to place microloans, which are deliberately small — the size a real first job or a first truck actually costs.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. A national nonprofit lender that works across state lines, so where you live is not what decides whether you get an answer. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.
Don't fall into these traps.
Payday and online lenders will find you fast with promises of 24-hour cash. Their rates—often 400% APR or higher—will trap you in a cycle where you borrow to repay the last loan. Broker and loan-matching services will collect your information and sell it to dozens of lenders, flooding you with offers while taking fees off the top. Seasonal income is real in Denali Borough; predatory lenders know that and structure loans to bleed you dry in the slow months. When you're desperate, a real lender (credit union, CDFI, SBA-backed) will wait a few days and say yes. A predatory one will say yes in 10 minutes—that's the danger sign.
Online and tribal lending sites offer 'fast cash' at 300–500% APR, hiding the true cost behind language like 'payment plans' or 'tribal sovereign lending.'
Loan brokers and lead generators collect your information, sell it to multiple lenders, and charge upfront fees—leaving you with dozens of hard inquiries and no loan.
Predatory lenders time balloon payments or require weekly repayment during your slow season, knowing you'll run short and borrow again.
Everything below is set by Alaska, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 3 of the 6 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Alaska sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAXNo state · up to 7.5% local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$87K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING125.8
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
