No institution is headquartered inside the Kusilvak Census Area line.
That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 14 of Alaska's 30 counties hold a door in this lane, and Kusilvak Census Area is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Kusilvak Census Area.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Kusilvak Census Area is remote, and banks don't always reach here. You have options: Alaska Native corporations, state programs, credit unions, and CDFIs that understand rural Alaska. This guide walks you through real doors that open for contractors and small real-estate investors.
It's a relationship, not a score.
Banks in Alaska—especially outside Anchorage—treat you like a number. Credit unions and Alaska Native CDFIs do the opposite.
They know your community, your seasonal work, your collateral.
They'll ask what you're building, not just pull your credit file. In Kusilvak Census Area, a contractor or investor without perfect credit can still get financed if the lender knows you're reliable. That relationship is your real asset.

Forget what the banks say.
Big banks say you need three years of tax returns, a W-2, and a 680 credit score. Remote Alaska doesn't work that way. Seasonal income, self-employment, irregular deposits—that's normal here. Local CDFIs and credit unions know it. They look at cash flow, collateral, and your track record in the community. If a bank rejected you, don't stop.
Walk into a local credit union or call the SBA district office.
You have other ears.

Three things. Get them in order.
- 01Understand your income type
Are you a seasonal contractor, year-round self-employed, or both? Write it down honestly.
- 02Know what you own
Vehicle, land, equipment, inventory. That's collateral—even if it doesn't look like a house.
- 03Pick your lender type before you apply
A credit union isn't the same as an SBA lender, and an Alaska Native CDFI has different rules. Picking the right door first saves you rejection letters.

Three doors worth knowing.
Door 1: Alaska Credit Union Network. Credit unions across Alaska serve rural members—fewer fees than banks, faster decisions for contractors. Door 2: SBA Alaska District Office (Anchorage, 907-271-6237).

Based in Wasilla, Alaska. A community development financial institution, certified by the U.S. Treasury to lend where a bank will not, and used to a file that is not clean.
BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Juneau, Alaska. Treasury-certified as a CDFI, which is a mandate rather than a courtesy: reaching borrowers the mainstream market passes over is the job. It lends SBA microloan money.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business, and community lending where a bank has already said no.Based in Tukwila, Washington. Approved by the SBA to place microloans, which are deliberately small — the size a real first job or a first truck actually costs.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. A national nonprofit lender that works across state lines, so where you live is not what decides whether you get an answer. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.
Don't fall into these traps.
Payday lenders and tribal lending apps often advertise to rural Alaska because they know banks won't lend to you. Don't take that bait—the interest is ruinous and you'll be trapped in debt cycles. Brokers who promise 'special Alaska programs' and charge upfront fees are scams; the SBA and real CDFIs never charge to apply. Finally, don't let a single 'no' from one bank stop you. In Kusilvak Census Area, the right lender isn't the big one—it's the one that knows your area.
Apps and lenders marketing '72-hour loans' or 'tribal lending' to rural Alaska charge 400–600% APR and trap you in repeat debt.
Anyone charging you money to apply for a loan—before approval—is running a scam; legitimate lenders and the SBA charge nothing to apply.
One bank rejection doesn't mean no one will lend to you; credit unions, CDFIs, and SBA lenders often say yes when banks say no.
Everything below is set by Alaska, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 3 of the 6 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Alaska sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAXNo state · up to 7.5% local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$87K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING125.8
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
