No institution is headquartered inside the Skagway Municipality line.
That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 14 of Alaska's 30 counties hold a door in this lane, and Skagway Municipality is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Skagway Municipality.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Skagway is small, remote, and underserved by traditional banks—which means you need to know where the real money moves. This guide points you to local credit unions, state-backed programs, and regional lenders who actually understand Alaska's economy and ITIN lending. The goal: get you capital without the runaround.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Skagway, your bank account and your reputation are the same thing. When the big banks reject you—and they often do—local credit unions and community lenders still see your work, your clients, and your word. They lend to people, not just credit scores. That's your advantage. Build it deliberately.

Forget what the banks say.
Banks in Anchorage or Seattle don't know Skagway. They see a population under 1,000, seasonal tourism income, and remote geography—all red flags on their spreadsheet. Local lenders see something different: stable seasonal work, tourism that pays in cash, fishing permits, and homeowners who've been in place for years.
Stop taking rejection from distant institutions as truth.
Talk to people in your town.

Three things you can't skip.
- 01
Find out if you qualify for Alaska Native or Tlingit-specific lending programs—Skagway sits in Tlingit country, and some state and tribal programs flow through heritage.
- 02Know your actual monthly income from all sources
Not just W-2 wages; tourism, seasonal work, and gig income count and matter more here than in urban markets.
- 03Get a clear answer on ITIN lending before you apply anywhere
if you don't have a Social Security number, some lenders will work with you, but you have to ask directly.

Three doors worth knowing.
First, the Ketchikan Area Credit Union (KACU) is the closest federally chartered credit union and explicitly serves Southeast Alaska including Skagway; they offer small business and personal loans to ITIN holders and people with limited credit.

Based in Wasilla, Alaska. A community development financial institution, certified by the U.S. Treasury to lend where a bank will not, and used to a file that is not clean.
BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Juneau, Alaska. Treasury-certified as a CDFI, which is a mandate rather than a courtesy: reaching borrowers the mainstream market passes over is the job. It lends SBA microloan money.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business, and community lending where a bank has already said no.Based in Tukwila, Washington. Approved by the SBA to place microloans, which are deliberately small — the size a real first job or a first truck actually costs.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. A national nonprofit lender that works across state lines, so where you live is not what decides whether you get an answer. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.
Don't fall into these traps.
Payday lenders sometimes show up in remote Alaskan towns online or through referral—avoid them. Title loans against vehicles are tempting when you need cash fast, but the interest compounds fast and you can lose your truck. Predatory installment lenders often target seasonal workers between seasons; if someone promises cash in 24 hours with no documentation, ask why—that speed costs you money you won't see again.
Remote locations are easy targets; these loans roll over and trap you in debt cycles.
Lenders expect steady income; if you can't prove reserves or income across the full year, some will deny you or charge extra.
Not all Alaska lenders work with ITIN borrowers; asking the wrong lender first wastes time—call ahead and ask directly.
Everything below is set by Alaska, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 3 of the 6 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Alaska sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAXNo state · up to 7.5% local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$87K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING125.8
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
