The doors in Barren County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Barren County sits in south-central Kentucky with limited big-bank presence—which means local credit unions and state-backed lenders are your strongest bet. You don't need perfect credit or a W-2 to qualify for a real loan; you need the right intermediary. This guide points you to CDFIs, SBA resources, and ITIN-friendly lenders that actually serve solo contractors and small real-estate investors in your county.
It's a relationship, not a credit score.
Banks reject you because they run a single algorithm. A credit union or CDFI rejects you only after talking to you—or doesn't reject you at all because they see your cash flow, your years in business, or your collateral instead of just a three-digit number. In Barren County, where many solo contractors and immigrant investors operate outside the traditional W-2 paycheck track, a relationship-based lender is not a luxury.
It's the door that actually opens. Start by walking into a local credit union or calling a CDFI loan officer.
Bring your tax returns, your bank statements, and your story.
They will listen.

Forget what the banks say.
A big bank tells you: 'No ITIN, no loan.' 'No two years of tax returns, no approval.' 'Your business is too new.' These are not laws. They are policies. CDFIs and many credit unions operate under different rules, funded by government and community trust to do exactly what banks won't. The SBA district office in Kentucky exists to steer you toward lenders who say yes to contractors with irregular income, immigrant status, and newer businesses.
When a bank says no, that is the moment to call a CDFI or credit union.
That is not the end of your search. That is where it actually begins.

Three things. Get them in order.
- 01
Open a business or personal bank account at a local credit union—Farmers Bank of Central Kentucky or Barren County Community Credit Union if either serves your town. Bring an ID, a utility bill, and any tax return or business license. This account is proof you exist and manage money.
- 02Gather your last two years of personal and business tax returns, plus your last three months of bank statements.
If you operate on cash, keep a written ledger or deposit records.
- 03
Call the Kentucky CDFI Network or the SBA district office in Louisville and ask which lenders serve Barren County contractors with your profile. Do not apply to five lenders at once; apply to three, one week apart. Each application dings your credit slightly, and lenders see when you've been shopping.

Three doors worth knowing.
Door One: Farmers Bank of Central Kentucky (headquartered in Glasgow, Barren County). They know the local market, work with agricultural and small-business borrowers, and are more flexible than national chains.

Based in Bowling Green, Kentucky. A credit union — owned by its members rather than by shareholders, which is exactly what changes the conversation after a bank has said no. It is CDFI-certified.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing, and buying, repairing or refinancing a home.Based in Radcliff, Kentucky. A member-owned credit union, which means the people deciding on your file answer to depositors in the same towns you work in.
BEST FORBuying, repairing or refinancing a home, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.
Don't fall into these traps.
Payday lenders and check-cashing shops often set up in rural Kentucky counties like Barren. They offer fast money at 400% annual interest. One loan rolls into three, and you owe more than you borrowed. A $500 payday loan can cost you $1,800 by year's end. Broker fees and application fees can hide in loan paperwork. A real lender discloses all costs upfront. If a lender asks for payment before approval, hang up. Online lenders and 'tribal' lenders claim to be unregulated and prey on rejected applicants; many are outright fraud. Stick to lenders with a physical address in Kentucky or a verifiable SBA or CDFI affiliation.
One $500 loan at 400% APR becomes three loans and $1,800 in debt within months.
Fake lenders collect application, origination, or processing fees before approval—then disappear or deny you.
Tribal and unregulated online lenders claim no Kentucky rules apply and often steal personal data or charge illegal rates.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Kentucky sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAX4.0% flat (2026)
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX6.0% state · no local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$60K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING92.9
