NO DOORS INSIDE THE LINE

No institution is headquartered inside the Dawson County line.

That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 37 of Montana's 56 counties hold a door in this lane, and Dawson County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.

THE DIRECTORY

The doors in Dawson County.

The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

THE SMALL PRINT

How to read this list.

No agenda

We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.

Based here vs. serves here

A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.

Where this comes from

Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.

THE GUIDE

Dawson County is ranch and oil country—and banks often treat contractors and small operators like outsiders. You have better options: local credit unions, state programs built for Montana, and lenders who understand self-employment. This guide points you to the real doors that open for people like you.

It's a relationship, not a transaction.

When a bank rejects you, they're not saying no to your money—they're saying no to paperwork they don't recognize. A solo contractor, a small ranch operator, or someone living on variable income looks "risky" on a form. But in Dawson County, you're not filling out a form for a stranger in Helena or New York. You're walking into a credit union, a CDFI, or an intermediary lender who actually looks at the whole picture: your history, your land, your equipment, your seasonal patterns.

That relationship—local, human, built on trust—is the real financing tool.

Banks sell transactions. Credit unions and CDFIs sell partnerships. You need a partnership.

Personal Financing · DAWSON COUNTY

Forget what the banks say.

Banks will tell you that you need two years of tax returns, a W-2, a steady paycheck. They'll tell you that self-employment doesn't count. They'll tell you that your ITIN number disqualifies you. None of this is true—it's just the fastest way for a bank to say no without looking at who you are. Credit unions in Montana use different standards. State programs don't require perfect income documentation.

ITIN-friendly lenders exist and are active here. The SBA has district resources that help small operators navigate loans specifically designed for people banks reject.

When a bank says no, that's not the final word.

It's the beginning of the conversation at the right table.

Three things you can't skip.

  1. 01Know your credit score and fix what you can before you walk in anywhere.

You don't need perfect credit, but you need to know where you stand and be honest about it. Pull your free report at annualcreditreport.com and dispute anything wrong.

  2. 02Gather twelve months of bank statements

From your business account, your personal account, whatever shows your real cash flow. Banks want tax returns; lenders who understand you want to see what actually moves through your account.

  3. 03Write down what you're borrowing for and how you'll pay it back in plain language.

Are you buying equipment? Land? Refinancing debt? Covering seasonal gaps? The clearer your answer, the faster the conversation moves. These three things take a few hours and change everything.

WHERE TO START

Three doors worth knowing.

Door One: Dawson County Credit Union (or the closest credit union to you in Prairie County, Glendive area) is the most direct path. Credit unions lend to their members—people who live here, run businesses here, understand here.

WHAT TO AVOID

Don't fall into these traps.

Trap One: don't go to a payday lender or title lender, even if you're desperate. These shops are designed to trap you in a cycle—you borrow $500 at 400% annual interest, you can't pay it back, you roll it over, and suddenly you're paying $2,000 to borrow $500. The credit union takes longer but costs a fraction. Trap Two: don't assume your ITIN number disqualifies you from regular lending. It doesn't. Some lenders won't work with it; many will. Ask before you assume. Trap Three: don't borrow from a broker or middleman without understanding the total cost. Some brokers add layers of fees that hide the real rate you're paying. Go direct to the lender whenever possible, or ask the broker to show you the final number in writing before you sign anything.

PAYDAY SPIRAL

Payday and title loans charge 400%+ annual interest and trap you in a cycle of rolling debt that gets worse, not better.

BROKER MARKUP LAYERS

Middlemen add hidden fees and higher rates on top of the real loan cost; always ask for the final total cost in writing.

ITIN ASSUMPTION

Many assume an ITIN number disqualifies you from regular lending; it doesn't—ask before you give up.

RIGHT HEREMontana, and the rules that apply in Dawson County.
4 DOORS ABOVE2 TAKE AN ITIN

Everything below is set by Montana, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 4 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.

The rules where you are.

None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.

  • STATE INCOME TAX4.7% – 5.9%

What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.

  • SALES TAXNone

What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.

  • MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$66K

Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.

  • COST OF LIVING102.9

National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
