The doors in Golden Valley County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Golden Valley County is ranch and agricultural land—tight-knit, cash-flow uneven, and skeptical of outside lenders. You won't find much conventional bank appetite here, but you will find local credit unions, state farm programs, and SBA-backed lenders who understand seasonal income and land collateral. Start local, not with online lenders.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Golden Valley County, financing works differently than in the city. Banks see you as a number on a spreadsheet; local lenders see you as a neighbor whose hay sells in July and cattle turn over in fall. They know your land, your family's history, and your seasonal patterns. When you walk into a local credit union or sit down with a loan officer from an ag-focused CDFI, you're not just applying—you're asking to join their circle.
That relationship is worth more than a 0.5% rate difference.
Build it first, then talk numbers.

Forget what the banks say.
Chain banks in Billings or Helena don't lend here anymore—they've written Golden Valley off as too rural, too risky. What they call 'insufficient collateral' or 'unverifiable income,' local lenders call 'normal Tuesday.' Your irregular income, your land-based equity, your multi-generational tie to the community—these are assets, not liabilities, when you're sitting across from someone who knows the county.
Don't let a rejection letter from Bank of America become your story.
That letter was never meant for here.

Five things. Get them in order.
- 01Audit your income
Write down three years of tax returns, profit-and-loss statements, and seasonal cash flow. Local lenders want to see the real picture, not hope.
- 02Know your land's value
Get a recent appraisal or talk to a real estate agent who works in Golden Valley—your equity is your safety net.
- 03Clean up your credit report
Get it free from annualcreditreport.com, dispute errors, and pay down high-ratio balances before you apply anywhere.
- 04Find your closest credit union or CDFI and visit in person—a ten-minute conversation beats a hundred emails.
- 05Have a clear use for the money
'Equipment purchase,' 'fence repair,' 'breeding stock'—specificity matters more than you'd think.

BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Missoula, Montana. An SBA intermediary, so the money is federal microloan money and the decision is made locally rather than by a national credit box.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. National in reach and nonprofit in structure, which is why it can take an application from a county with no branch in it. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.Based in New York, New York. Microloans for women entrepreneurs. Requires photo ID and proof of address — no SSN requirement. Branches in major metro areas. A national nonprofit lender that works across state lines, so where you live is not what decides whether you get an answer. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.

Don't fall into these traps.
Avoid online lenders promising 24-hour approval—they charge rates so high they'll sink a seasonal business. Don't use your land as collateral for an unsecured personal loan; you're giving up equity for nothing. And don't skip the credit union just because it's an extra trip; the difference in terms and spirit is real.
Fast approval online can mean 24–36% APR disguised as a 'small personal loan'; seasonal income makes high rates deadly.
Using your ranch as collateral for a short-term unsecured loan means you lose equity if cash flow tightens.
Third-party loan brokers in rural areas sometimes add origination, processing, and 'rural premium' fees that inflate your true cost by 2–4%.
Everything below is set by Montana, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 4 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAX4.7% – 5.9%
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAXNone
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$66K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING102.9
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
