No institution is headquartered inside the Prairie County line.
That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 37 of Montana's 56 counties hold a door in this lane, and Prairie County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Prairie County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Prairie County is rural, and big banks often don't understand rural contractors or small real-estate investors. Your best bets are local credit unions, community development financial institutions (CDFIs), and Montana-based lenders who speak your language. This guide points you to the right doors—not the ones that will turn you away.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
Banks treat you like a file number. Credit unions and local lenders treat you like a neighbor who needs help. In Prairie County, where livestock, farming, and contracting are the backbone, you need someone who gets seasonal cash flow, land value, and equipment needs.
That person lives near you, not in a call center.
When you walk in with a real relationship—or even a referral from someone they know—doors open that stay closed for strangers with a spreadsheet.

Forget what the banks say.
Big banks have algorithms. They say no to ITIN numbers, self-employed income, or non-traditional collateral like equipment or land held in family trusts.
They say no because their rules are written for wage earners in cities.
Prairie County contractors don't fit those boxes, and that's not your problem—it's theirs. Local lenders and credit unions have underwriters who can see what you actually own and what you actually earn. They don't need you to fit a template; they need you to tell the truth.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your credit score and pull your own report for free at annualcreditreport.com.
- 02Gather your last two years of tax returns and bank statements—not to impress anyone, but to know what story they tell.
- 03Figure out exactly what you're borrowing for and how much.
Don't ask for a round number; ask for what you need.
- 04Find three local lenders or credit unions and talk to them before you apply anywhere.
Don't apply to ten places at once; that tanks your score and makes you look desperate.

Four doors worth knowing.
Start with these: (1) Northern Plains Federal Credit Union, based in Malta, Montana, serves Prairie County and is known for working with ranchers, farmers, and contractors who have non-traditional income.

Don't fall into these traps.
Rural areas see predatory lenders, payday shops, and high-interest 'business loans' that charge 50% or more annually. Online lenders promise speed and no paperwork, then lock you into debt that grows faster than your business does. And beware the 'equipment lender' who owns your tractor until you've paid three times its real value. These doors are easy to walk through when you're desperate. Walk past them. Local credit unions and legitimate CDFIs are slower, but they won't own your life at the end.
Online 'installment loans' promise faster approval but charge 36% to 50% annual interest, trapping you in debt cycle.
Lender holds title to your tractor or truck until you've paid two or three times its actual value, leaving you without collateral.
Applying at five lenders at once or to unknown online platforms tanks your score and makes real lenders nervous.
Everything below is set by Montana, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 4 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAX4.7% – 5.9%
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAXNone
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$66K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING102.9
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
