How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
This guide helps Mason County residents — including solo contractors, small real-estate investors, and ITIN holders — understand their personal financing options. It highlights local credit unions, CDFIs, and community lenders that actually serve the Shelton and Hood Canal area, not just national programs. You will find out who qualifies, what documents to gather, what traps to avoid, and where to get honest help nearby.
It's a process, not a rejection.
Personal financing covers any loan, line of credit, or installment plan tied to you as an individual rather than to a business entity. In Mason County, this includes personal loans from credit unions, personal lines of credit, ITIN-based loans, small installment loans for home repairs or tools, and secured loans using a vehicle or savings account as collateral.
Mason County's economy is rooted in timber, shellfish aquaculture, construction trades, and tourism along Hood Canal. Many residents work seasonally or as independent contractors — which means income can be irregular, and traditional banks sometimes turn people away for that reason alone.
The good news is that several local and regional lenders are specifically designed to serve exactly this kind of borrower.
You do not need a perfect credit score or a W-2 to access responsible financing here.

Forget what the banks say.
Qualification requirements vary by lender, but here is what is realistic in Mason County's local lending environment:
Seasonal and trade workers: If you work in timber harvesting, shellfish farming, construction, or hospitality, many local credit unions and CDFIs understand seasonal income cycles. They may average your income over 12–24 months rather than requiring consistent monthly pay stubs.
Independent contractors and sole proprietors: Contractors doing residential or commercial work in the Shelton, Belfair, or Hoodsport area often qualify using bank statements, 1099 forms, or profit-and-loss statements instead of W-2s.
ITIN holders: If you do not have a Social Security Number but have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), certain lenders in the region will still work with you. You will typically need at least one to two years of filed tax returns using your ITIN, a stable address history, and references from utility or rent payments.
Credit scores: Some local CDFIs and credit unions use alternative credit evaluation — meaning on-time rent, utilities, or phone payments can count even if your FICO score is low or thin. Do not assume a low score disqualifies you before speaking with a local lender.

Get your papers in order.
Gathering your paperwork before you apply saves time and shows lenders you are prepared. For most personal financing applications in Mason County, expect to bring:

- 02**ITIN or SSN
** Your ITIN letter from the IRS or your Social Security card

- 05**Employment or contractor history

Don't fall into these traps.
Mason County's rural setting means fewer physical bank branches and more reliance on online lenders, which raises the risk of encountering predatory products. Here are the most common traps to watch for:
Many online lenders advertise fast personal loans but bury an APR of 100%–400% in the fine print. If the annual percentage rate is above 36%, the loan is generally considered high-cost. Compare the APR, not just the monthly payment.
Some online lenders claim to operate under tribal sovereignty to avoid Washington state interest rate caps. These loans are often unregulated and carry extreme rates. The Washington DFI has taken action against several such lenders. Always verify the lender's Washington state license.
Common in rural areas, rent-to-own contracts for appliances or tools can cost two to four times the retail price over the full term. If you need equipment for your contracting work, ask Craft3 or your local credit union about a small equipment loan instead.
Legitimate lenders do not rush you. If anyone tells you the offer expires in hours or pressures you to sign without reading, leave.
Some personal loan contracts charge a fee if you pay off the loan early. Ask specifically whether there is a prepayment penalty before you sign. Most credit union and CDFI loans do not have them.
This is when a lender encourages you to refinance an existing loan repeatedly, adding new fees each time. Your balance barely drops while costs accumulate. Avoid any lender who suggests refinancing before you have paid down a significant portion of the original loan.
Sometimes informal lenders operate within tight-knit communities. While intentions may be good, unlicensed lending has no consumer protections. Always work with a licensed institution.
Everything below is set by Washington, and it reads the same in every county in it. The 3 marks above are this county's own doors — who opens one is decided by them, not by the state.
The rules where you are.
Washington State has stronger consumer lending protections than many other states. Here is what Mason County residents should know:
Washington's Consumer Loan Act limits interest rates on many personal loans. Payday loans are capped at 15% per $100 borrowed (which still adds up quickly — see the section on what to avoid below).
Washington limits payday loans to $700 or 30% of gross monthly income, whichever is less, and borrowers can only have one outstanding payday loan at a time. The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) enforces this.
Any lender offering personal loans in Washington must be licensed with the Washington DFI. You can verify a lender's license at dfi.wa.gov. If a lender cannot show you their Washington license, walk away.
If you or a household member is active-duty military (including those at Naval Base Kitsap, which is near Mason County), the federal Military Lending Act caps interest rates at 36% APR for most consumer loans. Washington state law provides additional protections.
For certain secured loans tied to your home, Washington borrowers have a three-business-day right of rescission. Read every contract before signing and ask if this right applies.
The Washington DFI offers a free consumer helpline if you have a complaint or question about a lender: 1-877-746-4334.
The short version.
- 01
If you need personal financing in Mason County, here is the short version of what to do:
- 02
1. Start with a credit union or CDFI. Kitsap Credit Union, Harborstone Credit Union, Timberland Bank, and Craft3 are your strongest local starting points. They understand rural Western Washington incomes, work with ITIN holders, and offer fairer rates than online lenders.
- 03
2. Get free advice first. Contact the Community Action Council of Lewis, Mason & Thurston Counties or the SBDC at Olympic College before you apply anywhere. A one-hour conversation with a financial coach can save you thousands of dollars.
- 04
3. Check any lender's Washington DFI license at dfi.wa.gov before sharing personal information or signing anything.
