How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
This guide helps solo contractors, small real-estate investors, and working families in Dane County, Wisconsin find trustworthy personal financing options. We focus on the local organizations — credit unions, CDFIs, and SBA-connected lenders — that actually serve this community, including people who use an ITIN instead of a Social Security Number. Federal programs are useful context, but your best starting point is always a local intermediary who knows Madison, Sun Prairie, Fitchburg, and the surrounding region. Take your time, ask questions, and never feel rushed by any lender.
What Is Personal Financing?
Personal financing covers any loan, line of credit, or financial product that you take out as an individual — not as a registered business. This includes personal installment loans, personal lines of credit, secured loans (backed by a car, savings account, or other asset), and credit-builder loans.
For solo contractors and small investors in Dane County, personal financing often bridges a gap: you need funds before a project pays out, or you want to strengthen your credit history so you can qualify for better terms on a future mortgage or business loan.
Key things to understand up front:
- The interest rate (APR) tells you the true annual cost of borrowing — always compare APRs, not just monthly payments.
- Loan term matters. A longer term lowers monthly payments but increases total interest paid.
- Secured loans tend to carry lower rates because you pledge an asset, but that asset is at risk if you miss payments.
- Credit-builder loans are specifically designed to help you build or repair a credit profile — your payments are reported to the credit bureaus, and you receive the funds at the end of the term.

Who Qualifies in Dane County?
Dane County is home to a diverse and growing workforce. Madison anchors a strong knowledge economy (University of Wisconsin, state government, healthcare, tech), while surrounding communities like Sun Prairie, Stoughton, Middleton, and Verona have significant manufacturing, construction, and agricultural employment.
Qualification for personal financing in this region generally depends on:
- Credit score — Most traditional lenders want a score of 620 or above for standard personal loans. However, many local credit unions and CDFIs have flexible underwriting that considers your payment history, employment stability, and relationships, not just a number.
- Income documentation — Steady income matters more than its source. Contractors, gig workers, and self-employed individuals can qualify using bank statements, 1099s, or client contracts.
- ITIN borrowers — Several lenders in and around Dane County accept an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in place of a Social Security Number. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to access responsible personal financing locally.
- Residency — Most local programs require that you live or work in Dane County or the surrounding region.
If your income is seasonal (construction, landscaping, agriculture), mention that upfront to your lender — many local institutions are familiar with Dane County's seasonal work patterns and will structure repayment accordingly.

Get your papers in order.
Having your paperwork ready speeds up the process and shows lenders you are organized. The exact list varies by institution, but most personal loan applications in Dane County will ask for:
- 01Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, consular ID/matrícula consular, or state ID)
- 02ITIN card or SSN documentation
- 03Proof of address
A utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement showing your Dane County address
- 04Proof of income:
- 05If employed
Two recent pay stubs or a letter from your employer
- 06If self-employed or a contractor
Two years of tax returns (1040 with Schedule C), recent 1099s, or 3–6 months of bank statements
- 07If you have rental income
Lease agreements and recent deposit records
- 08Recent bank statements (typically the last 2–3 months)
- 09If applying for a secured loan

Don't fall into these traps.
Dane County has responsible lenders, but predatory products also operate here. Knowing the warning signs protects you.
Payday and High-Cost Installment Loans
Any loan with a three-digit APR (100%, 200%, 400% or higher) is not a personal loan — it is a debt trap. These products are often marketed as fast, easy, or 'no credit check.' They are fast and easy to get into, and very hard to get out of. A $500 payday loan in Wisconsin can cost you $600 or more to repay in two weeks.
Rent-to-Own Products
These are not loans, but they function as extremely high-cost financing for appliances and electronics. The total cost can be three to four times the retail price of the item.
Prepayment Penalty Traps
Some lenders charge a fee if you pay off your loan early. Always ask: 'Is there a prepayment penalty?' Responsible lenders will answer clearly.
Pressure and Urgency
No legitimate lender will pressure you to sign today. If a lender says the offer expires in hours, or discourages you from reading the contract or asking questions, walk away.
Loan Flipping
Some lenders encourage you to refinance or 'roll over' a loan before it is paid off, generating new fees each time. This is called loan flipping and it erodes your financial position quickly.
Advance-Fee Scams
If a lender asks you to pay a fee before you receive your loan funds, stop. Legitimate lenders do not require upfront payments to 'unlock' a loan.
Signing Over Titles or Deeds
Be extremely cautious about any product that requires you to sign over the title to your vehicle or a deed to property as collateral for a small personal loan. Losing your car or home over a small debt is not a fair trade.
If something feels wrong, it probably is.. Talk to a financial counselor at Summit Credit Union, WWBIC, or the SBDC before signing anything you are unsure about. These services are free.
Everything below is set by Wisconsin, and it reads the same in every county in it. The 7 marks above are this county's own doors — who opens one is decided by them, not by the state.
The rules where you are.
Wisconsin has its own consumer protection rules that affect personal financing. Here is what Dane County borrowers should know:
Wisconsin Interest Rate Cap on Consumer Loans — Wisconsin does not have a broad statutory cap on personal loan interest rates for non-payday products from licensed lenders, which means rates can vary widely. This makes it especially important to compare APRs carefully.
Payday Loans in Wisconsin — Wisconsin does permit payday lending. The state requires lenders to be licensed and to disclose APRs, but payday loan APRs in Wisconsin can exceed 500%. Payday loans are not personal financing in the responsible sense — see the 'What to Avoid' section below.
Wisconsin Consumer Act (WCA) — The WCA provides important protections for borrowers, including the right to receive clear written disclosures of loan terms, the right to cure a default before a lender can accelerate a loan, and limits on certain collection practices. If you believe a lender has violated the WCA, you can file a complaint with the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) at wdfi.org.
Wisconsin DFI Licensing — You can verify whether a lender is properly licensed in Wisconsin at the DFI's online license lookup tool. Always check before borrowing from an unfamiliar institution.
Credit Reporting in Wisconsin — Wisconsin follows federal Fair Credit Reporting Act rules. You are entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three major bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com. Review yours before applying so there are no surprises.
Language Access — While not legally mandated for all lenders, many Dane County institutions offer Spanish-language services. Ask.
The short version.
- 01
Personal financing in Dane County works best when you start local. Credit unions like UW Credit Union, Summit Credit Union, and Dane County Credit Union offer personal loans and credit-builder products with fair rates and real human support. If you use an ITIN or have thin credit, organizations like WWBIC and Centro Hispano can connect you to lenders who work with your situation — you have options.
- 02
Before you apply anywhere, gather your ID, proof of address, and income documentation. Check your free credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com. Then reach out to at least two local institutions and compare their APRs and terms side by side.
- 03
Wisconsin's consumer protection rules give you the right to clear disclosures and the right to cure a default — know those rights. And avoid any product with a triple-digit APR, any lender who pressures you to sign quickly, or anyone who asks for money upfront.
- 04
Take your time. Ask questions. The best lenders in Dane County want to earn your trust, not rush you into a decision. Origen Capital is here as a directory to help you find your starting point — we do not lend money, and we will never ask for your personal information.
