The doors in Cleburne County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Cleburne County is rural, and the nearest bank branch might turn you away—but that's exactly why state and federal programs exist. You have access to community lenders, ITIN-friendly options, and SBA-backed loans that banks won't touch. This guide walks you through the actual doors open to you, in order.
It's a network, not a bank.
When a traditional bank rejects you, they're not saying no to money. They're saying no to *their* risk model. Cleburne County has a smaller population and limited branch coverage—Heflin and Wellington are the main towns—so big banks have written off the area. But CDFIs (Community Development Financial Institutions), SBA lenders, and credit unions have different rules.
They look at your character, your market knowledge, your sweat equity.
A solo contractor who has turned down other jobs to finish work on time looks like a credit union member, not a bank risk.

Forget what the banks say.
Banks say you need a perfect credit score, a personal guarantee on everything, and proof of income in the last two years. Credit unions and CDFIs say: show us your track record, your cash flow, your collateral. If you're an ITIN holder, some banks will shut the door. SBA district offices and ITIN-friendly lenders will open it. Banks prioritize speed and standardization.
Local lenders prioritize relationship and fit.
You were rejected because you don't fit their template, not because you can't pay back a loan.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know what you're borrowing for
Equipment, real estate, working capital, or land prep.
- 02Pull your credit report (AnnualCreditReport.com is free, once per year).
- 03Gather your last two years of tax returns
Bank statements, and a simple one-page description of your business.
- 04Identify which lender type fits (credit union, CDFI, SBA partner, ITIN-friendly lender).
Don't apply everywhere. Each application hits your credit. Apply in the right order: credit unions and CDFIs first (they're local and understand your market), then SBA-backed lenders, then ITIN-friendly banks if needed.

Four doors worth knowing.
Door 1: Calhoun County Credit Union (serves Cleburne County members; agriculture, construction, small business loans with flexible underwriting).

Based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A credit union — owned by its members rather than by shareholders, which is exactly what changes the conversation after a bank has said no.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing, and buying, repairing or refinancing a home.
Don't fall into these traps.
You have three main risks. Watch for them, because they will find you.
A middleman promises to 'find' you a lender, then charges 5–10% of the loan as an 'arrangement fee' before money hits your account; go directly to lenders.
A 'merchant cash advance' or 'equipment lease' that charges 40%+ APR and pulls from your daily card receipts; math doesn't work for real business.
Lender demands you guarantee a business loan with your personal credit and home equity; SBA loans and some CDFIs avoid this—ask upfront.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Alabama sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- BUSINESS TAX6.5%
What Alabama charges on top of federal. It is the first thing a lender reconciles when your numbers do not match your tax return.
- CORPORATE INCOME TAX6.5%
It depends on how the business is registered. A sole proprietor almost never pays it — worth knowing which side of that line you are on before you apply.
- SALES TAX4.0% state · 5.25% avg local
What you collect on a job, and what your materials cost. It is the gap between a bid that holds and one that does not.
- WHERE THE MONEY IS HEREAutomotive Manufacturing · Aerospace & Defense · Steel & Metals
Alabama's three biggest sectors. A local lender reads your file against them — a trade that serves these is a trade they already understand.
