The doors in Mccone County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
McCone County is rural and small, which means traditional banks often say no to real businesses. You have other paths: state and federal loan programs, credit unions, and CDFI lenders that understand ranch, agricultural, and construction work. Start local, then expand to regional resources—and know which traps will drain your time and money.
Forget what the banks say.
If a local bank tells you no, that's the end of their conversation, not the end of your options. Banks have credit boxes that don't fit small operators, seasonal work, or land held in a trust. They also won't tell you about SBA loans, USDA Rural Development programs, or state equipment-financing programs because those aren't their products. A bank's 'no' is data—not destiny.
Regional credit unions, CDFIs, and state agencies actively look for deals banks reject.
Your job is to walk in the door they open, not sit in the one the bank closed.

Three things you can't skip.
- 01Get your tax returns and business records clean and complete—even if you're a one-person operation.
Lenders need to see 2–3 years of income, whether W-2, 1099, or Schedule C.
- 02Know your credit score and check it now
CDFI and SBA lenders care less about a score below 640, but you should know yours.
- 03Decide what you're really borrowing for
Equipment, land, working capital, or a mix. Don't walk into a lender saying 'I need money.' Walk in saying 'I need $40,000 to buy a used backhoe to expand my excavation contracts.' Specificity moves lenders to action.

Three doors worth knowing.
Door One: Montana Community Development Corporation (MCDC), a state CDFI based in Helena. They work across rural Montana and understand agricultural, ranch, and small-business loans in counties like McCone.
Door Two: SBA District Office (Billings, about 200 miles south).
They don't lend directly, but they guarantee loans from partner lenders, making it cheaper and easier for you. Ask about SBA 7(a) loans and microloans. Door Three: Glacier Bank and local credit unions (like Valley Community Credit Union, if you can access it). Credit unions have more flexibility than big banks and often hold loan portfolios longer, so they care about your relationship, not just your score.

It's a resource problem, not a you problem.
McCone County has roughly 1,800 people spread across a large area. Big banks don't maintain local lending for small contractors or real-estate deals. That's not your fault—it's how rural banking works. But it doesn't mean you can't borrow.

Don't fall into these traps.
Trap One: Online lenders that advertise fast approval. Many are predatory and charge 30–50% interest. They destroy cash flow. Trap Two: Assuming you need perfect credit. You don't. Many CDFI and SBA lenders work with scores in the 600s and below if your income and collateral make sense. Trap Three: Skipping USDA Rural Development programs. If you're in unincorporated McCone County, you likely qualify for USDA business and housing loans at lower rates than conventional lenders. Check before you borrow anywhere else.
Fast-approval online lenders charge 30–50% interest and destroy your cash flow; avoid them even if a bank says no.
Rural Montana borrowers often qualify for USDA loans at lower rates than SBA or conventional loans but don't know to ask.
Mortgage and loan brokers may add fees you don't see until closing; always ask for a full fee list in writing before you sign anything.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- BUSINESS TAX6.75%
What Montana charges on top of federal. It is the first thing a lender reconciles when your numbers do not match your tax return.
- CORPORATE INCOME TAX6.75%
It depends on how the business is registered. A sole proprietor almost never pays it — worth knowing which side of that line you are on before you apply.
- SALES TAXNone
What you collect on a job, and what your materials cost. It is the gap between a bid that holds and one that does not.
- WHERE THE MONEY IS HEREAgriculture & Ranching · Mining & Natural Resources · Tourism & Outdoor
Montana's three biggest sectors. A local lender reads your file against them — a trade that serves these is a trade they already understand.
