That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 34 of North Dakota's 53 counties hold a door in this lane, and Renville County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Renville County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Renville County is rural, and the banks there know it—which means they often say no to solo contractors and small real-estate deals. You have better doors: local credit unions, the SBA district office in Fargo, and regional CDFIs that understand agricultural and small-business lending. This guide shows you the intermediary layer that works.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
Big banks treat your loan like a checkbox. Local credit unions and CDFIs in Renville County treat it like a relationship. That means they want to know your story—why you're building, what you've learned from past work, how you plan to pay back. Solo contractors and small real-estate investors in rural North Dakota have been rejected by big banks for decades because their deals don't fit a spreadsheet.
Credit unions and CDFIs use different spreadsheets.
They ask: Can this person deliver? Does the deal make sense locally? The answer is often yes when you bring it to the right intermediary.

Forget what the big banks say.
The 'no' you got from a Wells Fargo or US Bank branch in Renville County doesn't mean no everywhere. Big banks have standardized loan boxes: they want your credit score above 680, your debt-to-income ratio below 43%, and proof of three years of tax returns showing stable W-2 income. If you're self-employed, own a contractor business with variable income, or are buying a property that needs rehab, you don't fit the box.
But the SBA, credit unions, and CDFIs have different boxes.
They care about cash flow, collateral, and character.
They also understand that a contractor's income in February looks different from income in August. Stop asking the big bank to say yes. Ask the local intermediary instead.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your own numbers
Gather your last two years of tax returns (personal and business), your current bank statements, and a one-page summary of what you want to build or buy—and how much it costs.
- 02Visit the SBA office in Fargo (they cover Renville County).
They are free, they don't collect your information, and they tell you which lenders in your area work with your situation.
- 03Call or visit a local credit union
Not a big bank. Renville County has credit unions that understand farming, construction, and seasonal business.
- 04Ask each lender about SBA loans (7(a) or 504).
The SBA guarantees the loan, not makes the loan—that guarantee means the lender takes less risk, so they can say yes more often.

Four doors worth knowing.
Door 1: Renville County Farm Bureau Credit Union serves the county directly and has agricultural and business lending programs that understand seasonal cash flow.

Based in Fargo, North Dakota. An SBA microloan intermediary — a nonprofit that lends federal microloan money directly, in the sizes a bank does not bother with.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in New York, New York. Microloans for women entrepreneurs. Requires photo ID and proof of address — no SSN requirement. Branches in major metro areas. A nonprofit lender that operates nationally — useful precisely where the local branch map runs out. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business — with no social security number.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. National in reach and nonprofit in structure, which is why it can take an application from a county with no branch in it. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.
Don't fall into these traps.
Trap 1: Taking a payday loan or online lender 'short-term fix' because you're impatient. That money costs 200–400% annually and destroys your debt-to-income ratio for the next six months. It's slower to go to a credit union, but you'll actually qualify for the bigger loan. Trap 2: Lying on an application about your income or collateral. CDFIs and credit unions in small counties verify everything and talk to each other. One lie will close three doors at once. Trap 3: Assuming you need perfect credit. Credit unions and CDFIs look at recent history, not your score alone. A contractor with a 620 score and two years of steady income often qualifies; a salaried person with a 750 score but a recent job change sometimes doesn't.
Online lenders disguise high-interest loans as 'merchant cash advances' or 'revenue-based financing'—same 200–400% cost, no improvement to your credit profile.
Small-county lenders verify income and collateral easily; one false statement will disqualify you and damage your reputation locally.
Contractors and investors in rural Renville County often bypass their own credit union and go straight to a big bank, missing better rates and faster decisions from their neighbors.
Everything below is set by North Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. North Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- BUSINESS TAX4.31%
What North Dakota charges on top of federal. It is the first thing a lender reconciles when your numbers do not match your tax return.
- CORPORATE INCOME TAX1.41% – 4.31%
It depends on how the business is registered. A sole proprietor almost never pays it — worth knowing which side of that line you are on before you apply.
- SALES TAX5.0% state · 2.0% avg local
What you collect on a job, and what your materials cost. It is the gap between a bid that holds and one that does not.
- WHERE THE MONEY IS HEREOil & Gas · Agriculture & Grain · Energy & Wind
North Dakota's three biggest sectors. A local lender reads your file against them — a trade that serves these is a trade they already understand.
