NO AGENDA

Nobody paid to be on this list.

The 19 doors inside the county line come off public data, and 10 of them are owned by their own members. We do not ask for your name, and we earn nothing if you knock on one door rather than another.

We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.

Based here vs. serves here

A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.

Where this comes from

Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.

THE GUIDE

Hidalgo County is one of the most populous counties in Texas and one of the busiest freight corridors on the southern border. If you run a crew, a truck, a food trailer, or a produce operation here, financing exists — and an unusual amount of it is based inside the county line rather than in Dallas or Austin. This guide covers what business financing actually is, who qualifies given how people earn here, the documents you will be asked for, the institutions that serve this county, and the traps that hit Valley contractors hardest.

What Business Financing Is — and How It Works in Hidalgo County

It's a process, not a rejection.

Business financing means money to start, run, or grow a business: a term loan on a fixed schedule, a line of credit you draw on only when needed, a microloan for smaller amounts, equipment financing secured by the machine itself, or occasionally a grant you do not repay.

Hidalgo County's economy runs on movement. Freight crosses the international bridges and moves through the warehouse and cold-storage districts around Pharr and McAllen.

Produce out of the fields near Mercedes, Edinburg, and La Joya has to be picked, cooled, packed, and hauled.

Construction rarely stops. Around all of it sits the layer where most readers of this page actually work: the framing crew, the flatbed owner-operator, the welder, the landscaping outfit, the trailer kitchen, the storefront in Alamo or Mission.

In a county of roughly 870,000 people, the money most small operators need is not an expansion loan. It is a smaller amount, quickly, to bridge the gap between doing the work and being paid for it. Freight and construction pay on invoice; produce pays on season. So microloans, working-capital lines, and equipment loans are the products that fit here.

Who Qualifies — Judged Against How Hidalgo County Actually Earns

Forget what the banks say.

Lenders look at four things: whether you can repay, what your credit or ITIN history shows, how long you have operated, and whether the business makes sense in this market.

The local complication is that your income does not look like a paycheck. Subcontractors are paid on 1099s that arrive in bursts. Haulers are paid when the broker settles.

Packing work is heavy in season and thin out of it.

Counter businesses take real cash. None of that disqualifies you — but you have to show the pattern instead of asking a lender to assume it.

Strong candidates here:

  • Trade contractors — framing, concrete, roofing, electrical, HVAC, welding
  • Owner-operators and small fleets hauling produce or cross-border freight
  • Landscaping, cleaning, and maintenance crews with recurring commercial accounts
  • Food trailers, panaderías, taquerías, and small retail storefronts
  • Small warehousing, packing, and customs-support services

An ITIN does not shut you out of business lending. If your business is new or your credit file is thin, a microloan is the honest first step — smaller amount, shorter term, and a repayment record that opens the next door.

Documents You Will Typically Need

Get your papers in order.

Checklists vary, but nearly every business lender in Texas asks for some version of this. Gathering it first is the biggest time-saver available to you.

  1. 01Government-issued photo ID, and your ITIN or SSN
  2. 02Assumed name (DBA) certificate filed with the county clerk, or your LLC paperwork
  3. 03Sales-tax permit, if you sell taxable goods
  4. 04Last two years of personal tax returns, plus business returns if any exist
  1. 05Three to six months of bank statements
  2. 06A simple profit-and-loss statement — one you typed yourself counts
  3. 07One-page description

What you do, who pays you, how the loan gets repaid

WHAT TO AVOID

Don't fall into these traps.

Border-region contractors get targeted hard, precisely because the cash flow is real and the paperwork is often incomplete.

Merchant cash advances.

Not a loan — the sale of your future revenue at a steep discount, collected by a daily draft from your account, and among the most expensive money a small business can take.

Any daily ACH debit.

A product that pulls from your account every business day is built around your desperation, not your cash flow.

Upfront fees before approval.

No legitimate lender charges a large fee to consider your application.

Brokers who ask for your ITIN and a deposit.

Give your ITIN to an institution you have verified, never to an intermediary who found you on social media.

"Notario público" confusion.

In Texas a notary public is not a lawyer and cannot give legal or immigration advice, whatever the sign says; business structure and immigration questions need a licensed attorney or an accredited representative.

Urgency.

No real lender says the offer dies today — take the documents home and compare at least two.

Texas-Specific Notes for Hidalgo County Businesses

The rules where you are.

If you operate as a sole proprietor under a name that is not your own, file an assumed name certificate — a DBA — with the Hidalgo County clerk. Lenders ask for it constantly and it is one of the cheapest documents you will ever need. LLC and corporation registration goes through the Texas Secretary of State; the state comptroller handles your sales-tax permit and franchise-tax filings.

Texas has no personal state income tax, so the returns a lender reviews are federal. That simplifies the file, and it also removes any fallback if those returns understate what the business earns — one more reason to bank your revenue.

If your work is in construction, confirm what licensing your trade requires and how mechanic's lien rights work in Texas before you finance a job. Getting paid is a financing issue, not only a legal one.

THE SHORT VERSION

The short version.

  1. 01

If you run a business or contract independently in Hidalgo County, you are in one of the better-served counties in Texas for small-business lending. There is a real local layer here — community-development banks and credit unions headquartered in McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr, Alamo, Mercedes, and La Joya — and several exist specifically to lend where the big banks skip.

  2. 02

You do not need perfect credit or a Social Security Number. You need a visible income pattern, a few basic documents, and a plain answer to how the loan gets repaid. Gather your documents, deposit your cash, get free counseling, then knock on a local door before a national one. Ask every institution two questions: do you lend to ITIN holders, and do you report my repayment to the credit bureaus.

  3. 03

Origen Capital is a directory, not a lender. We do not collect your information and we do not sell financial products. Use this page as a starting point, and work directly with a licensed lender, credit union, or nonprofit CDFI when you are ready to apply.
