No agenda

We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.

Based here vs. serves here

A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.

Where this comes from

Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.

What Is Business Financing — and How Does It Work Here?

It's a process, not a rejection.

Business financing means borrowing money or accessing capital to start, grow, or stabilize a business. In Lincoln County, Wyoming — a rural, high-elevation region anchored by Afton, Kemmerer, and Star Valley — lenders understand that the local economy runs on agriculture, energy, tourism, trades, and small retail. You are not dealing with a big-city bank that expects a Fortune 500 balance sheet. The financing products most relevant here include:

  1. 01**Term loans**

A lump sum repaid over a fixed period, good for equipment or real estate

  2. 02**Lines of credit**

Flexible borrowing up to a limit, useful for seasonal cash flow gaps

  3. 03**Microloans**

Smaller loans (often under $50,000) through community lenders, ideal for sole proprietors and startups

  4. 04**SBA-guaranteed loans**

The federal Small Business Administration does not lend directly; it guarantees loans made by approved local and regional lenders, which reduces the lender's risk and can help you qualify

  5. 05**CDFI loans**

Community Development Financial Institutions are mission-driven lenders that serve borrowers who may not qualify at traditional banks

Who Qualifies? Local Factors That Matter in Lincoln County

Forget what the banks say.

Lenders in Lincoln County look at roughly the same things as lenders anywhere — your credit, your income, your debt, your business plan — but the regional context shapes expectations in important ways.

If you are an established local business: Two or more years of tax returns showing consistent income go a long way. Lenders here are familiar with the seasonal nature of many Lincoln County businesses, including outfitting, construction, and lodging. Don't be discouraged if your revenues dip in winter.

If you are a startup or newer business: You will likely need a solid business plan and some personal credit history. Microloans and CDFI products are often more accessible than conventional bank loans at this stage.

If you are a sole contractor or self-employed: You can qualify. Lenders will typically want to see Schedule C tax filings, 1099s, or bank statements. Being self-employed is common in Lincoln County and lenders here understand it.

If you do not have a Social Security Number: Some lenders in Wyoming accept an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in place of an SSN. An ITIN shows that you file taxes and have a financial track record — that matters. Ask specifically about ITIN-friendly products before assuming a lender cannot help you.

If you own or invest in rural real estate: Lincoln County's land and property values are shaped by its proximity to the Wyoming Range and Star Valley's recreational economy. USDA Rural Development programs (a federal program, but accessed through local offices) can be a useful tool for rural property and business financing here.

Documents You Will Typically Need

Get your papers in order.

Every lender has slightly different requirements, but gathering these documents before you sit down with anyone will save time and show that you are serious:

For all applicants:

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or consular ID)
  • Social Security Number or ITIN
  • Two to three years of personal federal tax returns
  • Three to six months of personal bank statements

For existing businesses:

  • Two to three years of business tax returns (or Schedule C if sole proprietor)
  • Three to six months of business bank statements
  • Current profit and loss statement
  • List of business debts (leases, loans, equipment financing)
  • Business licenses or registrations (Wyoming Secretary of State registration, local licenses)

For startups:

  • Business plan with financial projections (12–24 months)
  • Resume or background showing relevant experience
  • Personal financial statement

For real estate or equipment financing:

  • Description and estimated value of the asset
  • Purchase agreement or quote, if available

If you don't have everything on this list, don't wait. Talk to a local lender or CDFI first — many will help you figure out what you actually need for their specific products.

WHAT TO AVOID

Don't fall into these traps.

Not every lender is looking out for you. Here are patterns to recognize and avoid, especially if you are in a hurry or feel like traditional lenders have already turned you down:

Merchant Cash Advances (MCAs)

These are not loans — they are purchases of your future revenue at a steep discount. Effective APRs can exceed 100%. They are marketed aggressively to small businesses and can trap you in a cycle of rolling advances. Avoid them if at all possible.

Pressure to sign quickly

A legitimate lender will give you time to read the documents, consult an advisor, and ask questions. If anyone tells you the offer expires today or pressures you to decide immediately, walk away.

Fees before approval

You should not have to pay a lender a significant fee before they approve your loan. Application fees may be small and reasonable; large upfront fees are a warning sign.

Unusually high interest rates on term loans

For business term loans in 2024–2025, rates above 15–20% APR should prompt you to ask hard questions. Rates above 30% on a term loan are almost always a sign of a predatory product.

Loan stacking

Some online lenders encourage you to take multiple loans simultaneously from different sources. This creates a debt burden that is very hard to manage and can destroy a small business quickly.

Promises of guaranteed approval

No responsible lender guarantees approval before reviewing your documents. Guaranteed-approval marketing is a hallmark of predatory products.

If you are unsure about a lender or a loan offer

Contact the Wyoming SBDC or the SBA Wyoming District Office. They can review the terms with you at no charge and tell you whether what you are looking at is reasonable.

RIGHT HEREWyoming, and the rules that apply in Lincoln County.
Wyoming State-Specific Regulatory Notes

The rules where you are.

Wyoming has a straightforward regulatory environment for small businesses, but there are a few things worth knowing before you borrow:

Business Registration

Any business operating in Wyoming should be registered with the Wyoming Secretary of State. This is simple and inexpensive online. Lenders will want to see this. Sole proprietors operating under their own name may not need to register, but an LLC or corporation registration is required for those entities.

No State Income Tax

Wyoming has no personal or corporate state income tax, which simplifies your tax picture compared to many other states. This also means lenders here are used to evaluating federal tax returns only — you will not need to produce state income tax returns.

Licensing Requirements

Some trades in Wyoming require state licensing (contractors, electricians, plumbers, real estate brokers). Make sure your licenses are current before approaching lenders — it signals professionalism and is sometimes a condition of loan approval.

Wyoming Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) Filings

When a lender takes a security interest in your business assets (equipment, inventory, receivables), they will typically file a UCC-1 financing statement with the Wyoming Secretary of State. This is standard and not a red flag — it protects the lender's interest in the collateral.

Interest Rate Environment

Wyoming does not cap commercial loan interest rates the way some states do for consumer lending. Always read your loan agreement carefully and understand your Annual Percentage Rate (APR), fees, and prepayment terms before signing.

USDA Rural Designation

Most of Lincoln County qualifies as rural under USDA definitions, which makes businesses and real estate projects here eligible for USDA Rural Development loan guarantees. This is a meaningful advantage — use it.
