That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 14 of Alaska's 30 counties hold a door in this lane, and Bristol Bay Borough is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Bristol Bay Borough.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Bristol Bay Borough sits remote, which means most big banks won't touch you—but Alaska has state programs and credit unions that do. You'll need to work through local intermediaries and state-backed lenders who understand seasonal income and self-employment. Start with your credit union and Alaska's state housing authority before anyone else.
It's a process, not a rejection.
Bristol Bay Borough real-estate financing looks impossible because it's remote, seasonal, and thinly served. That's the trap. Banks see distance and fishing-season income volatility and walk away.
But that rejection doesn't mean you can't build.
Alaska's state programs, credit unions, and a handful of ITIN-savvy lenders are specifically designed for exactly this: places where the national banks gave up. Your job is to find the lender who sees Bristol Bay not as a problem but as a real market. They exist.

Forget what the national banks say.
Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America: they have automated systems that reject anything outside their mapped zones or income patterns. They're not wrong for their shareholders; they're just not built for you. What they call 'too risky' or 'unverifiable income' is what credit unions and state lenders call 'local knowledge.' A bank's no is not the market's no.
The lenders listed below have actual people in Alaska who understand cannery work, fishing permits, and seasonal paychecks.
Start there, not with the big names.

Three things you can't skip.
- 01Credit score
Check it now at annualcreditreport.com (free, real). If you're below 620, work on that before you apply—credit unions will give you a shot, but they need to see you're serious.
- 02Proof of income for two years
Pay stubs, tax returns, profit-and-loss statements—whatever you have. Seasonal workers often show less on paper than they earn; be ready to explain that clearly.
- 03Down payment
Alaska state programs can go as low as 3–5 percent down, but you need something real. Save now; it changes everything.

Based in Wasilla, Alaska. A community development financial institution, certified by the U.S. Treasury to lend where a bank will not, and used to a file that is not clean.
BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Juneau, Alaska. Treasury-certified as a CDFI, which is a mandate rather than a courtesy: reaching borrowers the mainstream market passes over is the job. It lends SBA microloan money.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business, and community lending where a bank has already said no.Based in Tukwila, Washington. Approved by the SBA to place microloans, which are deliberately small — the size a real first job or a first truck actually costs.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. A national nonprofit lender that works across state lines, so where you live is not what decides whether you get an answer. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.
Don't fall into these traps.
Desperation closes your mind. If someone offers you a 12 percent rate or a loan that 'doesn't check income,' they're not saving you—they're betting you'll default. Slow down. Second: don't let distance make you invisible. You have to do the legwork. Call lenders directly; email applications; show your face (or voice) as a real person from Bristol Bay, not a case number. Third: seasonal income is not a secret shame. State lenders expect it. If a lender acts like your income pattern is suspicious, that's a signal they don't belong in your file.
A lender who refuses to average your income over two years or count fishing/cannery work as 'real' income is not built for Bristol Bay.
Don't pay a local broker to 'place' you with a lender you could call directly; go straight to the source and save 1–2 percent.
Fast approvals from lenders who don't know Alaska or Bristol Bay often collapse at underwriting when your income doesn't fit a template.
Everything below is set by Alaska, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 3 of the 6 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Alaska sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- PROPERTY TAX1.04% effective
What Alaska charges every year on what the house is worth. No lender sets it and it does not go away when the loan does — it is part of the payment from day one.
- MEDIAN HOME, STATEWIDE$360K
The number an appraisal gets read against. A house well under it is often the loan a big bank does not want — which is exactly what the doors above are for.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
It comes off before a lender works out how much of your income can go to a payment.
- COST OF LIVING125.8
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here than it does nationally.
