That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 14 of Alaska's 30 counties hold a door in this lane, and Bristol Bay Borough is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Bristol Bay Borough.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Bristol Bay Borough's economy depends on fishing, hunting, and seasonal work—which banks don't understand. You have better options: credit unions, Alaska Native corporations, SBA programs, and lenders who work with variable income. Start locally, build credit quietly, and skip the payday trap.
It's a process, not a rejection.
Bristol Bay runs on the salmon season, hunting leases, and tourism work. Banks want to see a W-2 and steady paychecks. You don't have that, and you never will.
That's not a weakness—it's the reality of the region.
Lenders who understand seasonal income exist; most banks don't. They'll reject you because they can't read your pattern, not because you're broke. The first step is finding someone who speaks your cash-flow language.

Forget what the banks say.
A Chase or Wells Fargo loan officer will tell you that variable income is too risky, that you need collateral you don't have, or that your credit score is 30 points too low. They're reading a national playbook that doesn't fit Bristol Bay. A credit union or Alaska-based CDFI will look at three years of tax returns, your seasonal pattern, your reputation in the community, and whether you own land or fishing rights.
Banks are not your only door. In fact, they're rarely the right door. When a bank says no, it means: try the next place.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Pull your credit report free at annualcreditreport
Com. You need to know your own score and fix any wrong entries before you talk to a lender.
- 02Gather three years of personal tax returns and
If you have a business, three years of business returns. Seasonal lenders want to see your pattern over time, not one good month.
- 03Make a list of assets you own
Land, a boat, equipment, or shares in a Native corporation. Collateral matters, even if you don't have much.
- 04Know your co-signer options
A parent, spouse, or business partner with better credit can open doors that stay closed otherwise.

Four doors worth knowing.
Each one serves Bristol Bay differently. Start with the one closest to you.

Based in Wasilla, Alaska. A community development financial institution, certified by the U.S. Treasury to lend where a bank will not, and used to a file that is not clean.
BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Juneau, Alaska. Treasury-certified as a CDFI, which is a mandate rather than a courtesy: reaching borrowers the mainstream market passes over is the job. It lends SBA microloan money.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business, and community lending where a bank has already said no.Based in Tukwila, Washington. Approved by the SBA to place microloans, which are deliberately small — the size a real first job or a first truck actually costs.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. A national nonprofit lender that works across state lines, so where you live is not what decides whether you get an answer. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.
Don't fall into these traps.
Alaska is full of lenders who specialize in taking advantage of people who are desperate or don't know better. Watch for high-interest short-term loans dressed up as 'emergency credit,' brokers who charge 5–10 percent just to submit your application, and predatory home-equity lines that can cost you your land if you miss one payment. Seasonal workers are targets. Know the cost before you sign.
Being told your income is 'too variable' by a bank that won't look at your three-year tax return average.
Paying 5–10 percent upfront to a loan broker who then shops your application to subprime lenders, costing you money and credit pulls.
High-interest home-equity loans that sound fast and easy but put your land or cabin at risk if you miss a payment in a bad season.
Everything below is set by Alaska, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 3 of the 6 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Alaska sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAXNo state · up to 7.5% local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$87K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING125.8
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
