How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.

What Is Personal Financing?
Personal financing means borrowing money or accessing credit for your own needs — not for a registered business entity. This can include personal loans, personal lines of credit, auto loans, home improvement loans, or even credit-builder products designed to help you establish a credit history. In Polk County, personal financing is used by a wide range of people: construction workers who need a truck, families making home repairs, solo contractors managing cash-flow gaps between jobs, and first-time buyers saving toward a home.
Personal financing is different from business financing, though the two often overlap for self-employed people and sole proprietors.
Understanding which type of product fits your situation is the first step — and local lenders in the Des Moines metro area are generally well-equipped to help you figure that out.

Forget what the banks say.
Polk County is home to Des Moines, Iowa's capital and largest city, and the county's economy is one of the most diverse in the state.
Major employers include Principal Financial Group, Wells Fargo's regional operations, UnityPoint Health, and a growing logistics and warehousing sector.
The county also has a significant and growing Latino community — particularly in areas like the Drake neighborhood, Urbandale, and south Des Moines — many of whom work in construction, food processing, landscaping, and service industries.
Qualification for personal financing generally depends on three things: income stability, credit history, and identity verification. Most traditional lenders want to see steady income (W-2 or verifiable self-employment income), a credit score, and a government-issued ID plus a Social Security Number (SSN). However, several local and ITIN-friendly lenders in Polk County work with borrowers who have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) instead of an SSN — so not having a Social Security number does not automatically disqualify you.
If you are self-employed or a solo contractor, lenders will typically look at your tax returns, bank statements, or invoices to verify income.

Get your papers in order.
Every lender is a little different, but here is a practical checklist of what most personal loan applications in Polk County will require:
- 01**Proof of identity
** State-issued ID, passport, or consular ID (matrícula consular). Some ITIN-friendly lenders accept foreign passports.
- 02**Proof of income
** Recent pay stubs (last 2–3), last 2 years of tax returns (especially if self-employed), or bank statements showing regular deposits.
- 03**ITIN or SSN
** Your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or Social Security Number. Several local lenders accept ITINs — ask specifically.
- 04**Proof of address
** A utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement showing your Polk County address.
- 05**Bank account information
** Most lenders require an active checking or savings account for direct deposit of funds and autopay setup.
- 06**Credit authorization
** You will be asked to consent to a credit check. Some lenders offer a "soft pull" pre-qualification that does not affect your score.

Don't fall into these traps.
Polk County residents — especially those who are new to the U.S. financial system, have limited credit history, or speak English as a second language — can be targeted by lenders who do not have their best interests in mind. Here are the patterns to watch for:
A personal loan APR above 36% is generally considered high-risk territory. Payday loans, rent-to-own arrangements, and some online installment lenders can charge 100%–400% APR. Compare rates at a local credit union or CDFI first.
While appealing, these almost always come with very high interest rates or hidden fees. They are often structured to trap borrowers in a cycle of re-borrowing.
Any lender who tells you the offer expires today, or discourages you from reading the contract, is a red flag. Legitimate lenders give you time.
Watch for mandatory add-ons like credit insurance or membership fees that inflate the real cost of the loan without adding real value.
Some lenders charge you a fee for paying off your loan early. In Iowa, for most consumer loans, prepayment penalties must be disclosed — read the fine print.
In the Latino community, individuals who call themselves "notarios" sometimes offer immigration or financial services they are not legally authorized to provide. In the U.S., a notary public is not a lawyer. For loan or legal advice, use a licensed lender or attorney.
If you cannot find a physical address or Iowa Division of Banking license number for a lender, proceed with extreme caution. Verify any lender at idob.iowa.gov before sharing personal information.
Everything below is set by Iowa, and it reads the same in every county in it. The 16 marks above are this county's own doors — who opens one is decided by them, not by the state.
The rules where you are.
Iowa has its own set of consumer protection rules that directly affect personal financing in Polk County. Here is what you should know:
This state law governs most consumer loans in Iowa, including personal loans, retail installment sales, and credit cards. It sets disclosure requirements that lenders must follow — they must clearly show you the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), total cost of the loan, and all fees before you sign.
Iowa regulates payday lenders under Iowa Code §533D. Payday loans are limited to a maximum of $500 per loan, and lenders must be licensed by the Iowa Division of Banking. However, these loans still carry extremely high APRs — often 300%–400% — and should be treated as a last resort, if used at all.
The state agency that regulates state-chartered banks and licensed lenders. If you have a complaint about a lender operating in Iowa, you can file it at: **idob.iowa.gov**.
Handles complaints about deceptive or predatory lending practices. Reach them at **iowaattorneygeneral.gov**.
Iowa does not tax personal loan proceeds as income. However, if debt is canceled or forgiven, that may be taxable — consult a tax preparer.
On certain home-secured loans (like home improvement loans using your home as collateral), Iowa borrowers have a three-business-day right to cancel — a federal rule that also applies in Iowa.
The short version.

If you live or work in Polk County and need personal financing, you have real options — and you do not have to go it alone. Start with a local credit union like Veridian or Des Moines Metropolitan Credit Union, or reach out to a nonprofit like ISU Extension Polk County or Proteus Iowa for free guidance before you apply anywhere. If you have an ITIN instead of a Social Security number, ask lenders specifically about their ITIN policies — some local institutions do accept them. Iowa's consumer protection laws require lenders to be clear about costs, and the Iowa Division of Banking and Attorney General's office are there if something goes wrong. Avoid payday lenders and high-pressure online offers when possible. Take your time, gather your documents, and connect with community organizations in Des Moines that can help you find a lender who treats you with respect.
