That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 37 of Montana's 56 counties hold a door in this lane, and Garfield County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Garfield County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Garfield County is rural, which means the big banks ignore most of us here—but that's not a dead end. Local credit unions, state farm programs, and regional CDFIs know this county and will work with contractors and small real-estate investors when banks say no. This guide walks you through the actual doors that open.
It's a relationship, not a rejection.
When a bank turns you down, they're not saying you're broke or stupid. They're saying you don't fit their automated checklist. Garfield County lenders—the ones who know the land, the cattle cycles, the construction seasons—don't use that checklist. They look at you: your history in the county, your collateral, your willingness to show up and talk.
A CDFI or credit union officer here might approve what a Helena bank algorithm rejects in seconds.
That's not charity. It's how local lending works.

Forget what the banks say.
Banks tell you that you need perfect credit, a W-2, and six months of bank statements. They tell you that ITIN means no loan. They tell you that a contractor's income is too messy to verify. None of that is law; it's just their policy. CDFIs, SBA lenders, and farm-credit unions in Montana routinely work with self-employed people, immigrants, and folks with patchy credit.
The barrier isn't your life—it's the wrong window.
Find the right one.

Five things. Get them in order.
- 01Know what you're borrowing for
Real estate, equipment, working capital, or emergency cash? The loan type changes everything.
- 02Gather what you actually have
Tax returns (even two years), bank statements, proof of land or property, and any collateral (truck, equipment, livestock).
- 03Find a local lender or CDFI that fits (see below).
- 04Get pre-qualified
Not rejected—different question, same lender.
- 05Prepare to answer the question 'Why do you need this and when will you pay it back?' in simple, honest words.
That's the conversation that closes the door or opens it.

BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Missoula, Montana. An SBA intermediary, so the money is federal microloan money and the decision is made locally rather than by a national credit box.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. National in reach and nonprofit in structure, which is why it can take an application from a county with no branch in it. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.Based in New York, New York. Microloans for women entrepreneurs. Requires photo ID and proof of address — no SSN requirement. Branches in major metro areas. A national nonprofit lender that works across state lines, so where you live is not what decides whether you get an answer. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.

Don't fall into these traps.
Avoid lenders who promise approval before asking questions—they're pricing in the risk by charging you 25% or more. Avoid 'no documentation' loans; they exist to hide bad terms. Don't borrow from someone who won't explain the full cost up front (rate, points, prepayment penalties, late fees). And don't take a loan in a language you don't fully understand; ask the lender to explain it in Spanish or bring someone you trust to interpret.
Short-term loans under other names (title loans, cash advances) that charge 300%+ annual interest and trap you in a cycle.
Lender takes security in your truck, home, or land without explaining what happens if you miss one payment.
Signing a loan document you don't fully understand because no interpreter was offered or provided.
Everything below is set by Montana, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 4 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAX4.7% – 5.9%
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAXNone
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$66K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING102.9
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
