That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 31 of Montana's 56 counties hold a door in this lane, and Garfield County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Garfield County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Garfield County is ranch and energy country—your bank probably doesn't understand your cash flow. Instead of waiting for a big-box lender to say no, start with Montana's state programs, regional credit unions that know agriculture, and SBA resources in Lewistown. You have more doors than you think.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
Banks treat you like a number. A local credit union, a CDFI, or a state-backed lender treats you like a neighbor they need to understand. In Garfield County, where seasonal work and ranching dominate, a lender who gets your calendar matters more than a lender with the lowest rate on paper.
You're looking for someone who will ask about your business three times before they ask for collateral once.
That changes everything.

Forget what the banks say.
Big banks in Billings or Great Falls have rulebooks written for Walmart, not for you. They'll tell you that you need two years of tax returns, a perfect credit score, and a personal guarantee. They'll tell you that a land loan takes six months.
They'll tell you no before they know your name.
Montana's credit unions and state lending programs don't operate on that script. They know seasonal cash flow. They know that a good contractor might have an irregular year. They're designed to say yes to people banks rejected.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know what you're borrowing for
Equipment, working capital, land, or refinance. The program that works depends on your answer.
- 02Pull your last two years of tax returns and one recent profit-and-loss statement, even if it's rough.
Lenders in Montana want to see your actual numbers, not your hopes.
- 03Find your nearest SBA office or CDFI first
They're free and they'll point you to the right door.
- 04Bring a co-signer or collateral if you have it, but don't assume you need perfect credit.
Many local lenders work with people who've had setbacks.

Four doors worth knowing.
Each opens to a different kind of money. Know which one fits your situation before you knock.

BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Missoula, Montana. An SBA intermediary, so the money is federal microloan money and the decision is made locally rather than by a national credit box.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in New York, New York. Microloans for women entrepreneurs. Requires photo ID and proof of address — no SSN requirement. Don't fall into these traps.
Garfield County sees predatory lending because distance and rural isolation make it hard to shop around. Read every word before you sign. If a lender won't explain their fees in plain language, walk. If they ask for money upfront, stop. If the interest rate changes after you apply, that's a red flag. Compare offers from at least two lenders, even if it takes longer. A real lender will wait.
A lender broker quotes you a rate, you agree, then fees appear at closing that nobody mentioned; by then you've already invested time and it feels too late to back out.
A lender offers to lower your rate or reduce fees if you agree right now, before you've compared with anyone else; the urgency is fake, the offer disappears when you ask for time.
A lender agrees to loan to your business but doesn't explain until the paperwork that you're personally liable for the full amount if the business fails; in rural Montana, this can mean losing land or equipment you didn't think was at risk.
Everything below is set by Montana, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 4 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- BUSINESS TAX6.75%
What Montana charges on top of federal. It is the first thing a lender reconciles when your numbers do not match your tax return.
- CORPORATE INCOME TAX6.75%
It depends on how the business is registered. A sole proprietor almost never pays it — worth knowing which side of that line you are on before you apply.
- SALES TAXNone
What you collect on a job, and what your materials cost. It is the gap between a bid that holds and one that does not.
- WHERE THE MONEY IS HEREAgriculture & Ranching · Mining & Natural Resources · Tourism & Outdoor
Montana's three biggest sectors. A local lender reads your file against them — a trade that serves these is a trade they already understand.
