That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 37 of Montana's 56 counties hold a door in this lane, and Powder River County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Powder River County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Powder River County is ranch and energy country, where traditional banks often miss the mark for independent operators and small investors. This guide points you toward local credit unions, state-level CDFIs, and SBA resources that understand Montana's economy and will actually listen to your story. You don't need perfect credit or a downtown office—you need the right door.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
Banks treat you like a file number. Local credit unions and CDFIs treat you like a neighbor. In Powder River County, where your reputation matters and your work is visible, financing works the same way. A lender who knows ranchers, contractors, and real-estate operators will ask about your cash flow, your land, your equipment—not just your credit score.
That relationship is worth more than a 0.5% better rate somewhere else.
Start with institutions where people know the county's seasonal rhythms and understand why a contractor might be cash-poor in January and strong in July.

Forget what the banks say.
Big banks use automated systems that reject Montana's self-employed and seasonal workers without a second thought. They don't see the value in a rancher with variable income or a contractor whose busy season doesn't match their underwriting calendar. Forget their 'no' and their timeline. Local credit unions and community development financial institutions (CDFIs) use real underwriting—they look at bank statements, cash flow, collateral like land and equipment, and your actual ability to repay.
An ITIN-friendly lender won't penalize you for not having a Social Security number.
State programs don't require the same documentation as national banks.
The system that rejected you isn't the only system.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your cash flow
Gather six months of bank statements and be honest about seasonal swings—lenders in Montana expect this and won't hold it against you.
- 02List your collateral
Land, equipment, vehicles, inventory. CDFIs and credit unions will lend against what you own.
- 03Identify which type of financing fits
Equipment loans, land loans, working capital, or a line of credit for seasonal gaps.
- 04Approach the right lender for that product
Don't waste time with a national bank that doesn't do equipment lending in rural Montana. Go straight to institutions that advertise they serve your county or state.

Four doors worth knowing.
Start here and move methodically. Each serves Powder River County or all of Montana and understands local financing needs.

Don't fall into these traps.
Financing moves fast when you're desperate, and that speed costs money. Slow down. Read every term before signing. Ask about prepayment penalties, balloon payments, and what happens if you miss one payment. Never borrow more than you need just because a lender will hand it to you—that's how contractors end up with equipment they can't use and debt they can't service. Watch for brokers who promise speed and then charge you thousands in fees that weren't clear upfront. A real lender on the local level will explain everything plainly and won't rush you.
Lender locks you into years of interest even if you pay off early; always ask if you can repay without penalty.
Middleman charges you fees you didn't agree to by routing your application through a lender and taking a cut; go directly to lenders and credit unions instead.
Bank divides your annual income by 12 and rejects you; find lenders who understand Montana's seasonal patterns and will average income over a full year.
Everything below is set by Montana, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 4 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAX4.7% – 5.9%
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAXNone
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$66K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING102.9
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
