The doors in Adams County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Adams County has few big banks but solid access to credit unions, state programs, and regional CDFIs that understand solo contractors and small real-estate investors. You don't need perfect credit or a decade of tax returns to build capital here—you need the right door. This guide walks you to it.
It's a partnership, not a transaction.
Banks treat you like a file number. Local credit unions and CDFIs in North Dakota treat you like a neighbor with a plan. The difference is real: they'll sit with you, ask about your actual business, and show you what paperwork matters most. Solo contractors and small-lot investors get rejected by big lenders because their income doesn't fit a box.
A credit union or CDFI in Adams County will instead ask: What are you building?
How do you make money? What collateral do you have? Answer those straight, and you're not a risk—you're a customer they know.

Forget what the bank told you.
If a bank said no, it wasn't because you can't borrow. It was because you don't fit their algorithm.
Banks want W-2 employees with 2 years of tax returns and perfect credit.
You're a contractor or investor—your income is real, but it looks different on paper. North Dakota credit unions and state-backed programs don't need that standard. They want to see bank statements, business receipts, and proof you've paid bills on time. Your ITIN works. A partnership agreement works. A letter from your accountant works. The bank didn't reject you; it rejected its own rule book.

Three things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your number
Pull your credit report free at annualcreditreport.com. You're not looking for perfection—you're looking for what lenders will actually see.
- 02Write down what you need and why
"I need $15,000 to buy materials for my contracting business and pay myself for two months while I build cash flow." Not vague. Not apologetic.
- 03Find a lender that works with your income type before you apply.
A CDFI that serves contractors won't make you prove W-2 income. A credit union that works with self-employed members won't reject an ITIN. Hitting the right door first saves you rejections and saves your credit score from taking hits.

Three doors worth knowing.
Door One: North Dakota credit unions. FCU (First Community Federal Credit Union) in Dickinson and similar institutions across the state work with self-employed people, contractors, and small investors.

Based in Lemmon, South Dakota. A credit union — owned by its members rather than by shareholders, which is exactly what changes the conversation after a bank has said no.

Don't fall into these traps.
Stay alert. The traps below have caught Adams County contractors and investors before.
Fast approval feels good until you read the fine print: 36% APR, fees hidden in the total, and a contract written to favor the lender if you're late.
A lender offers cash fast but wants to put a lien on your house, truck, and equipment—if you miss one payment, they take it all.
You're told your ITIN disqualifies you everywhere; in fact, CDFIs and credit unions in North Dakota actively work with ITIN-holder contractors and investors.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. North Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAX1.95% – 2.5%
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX5.0% state · 2.0% avg local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$74K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING94.6
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
