That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 34 of North Dakota's 53 counties hold a door in this lane, and Burke County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Burke County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Burke County is rural, which means big banks ignore it and credit unions matter more. You have options: local credit unions, state farm programs, SBA microloans through regional partners, and ITIN-friendly lenders if you're self-employed without a Social Security number. Start with the intermediaries—they know your county and move faster than national lenders.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Burke County, you are not a credit score. You are a neighbor with a plan. The credit unions and community lenders here do not auto-reject you because a national algorithm says no. They talk to you. They ask what you're building. That takes time, but it works. If a lender won't explain why they said no, that's not a lender—that's a machine.
Real lenders in rural North Dakota still have pulses.
Find them.

Forget what the banks say.
Large national banks have left Burke County. Their rules—minimum balances, minimum loan sizes, strict credit bands—were written for suburbs with millions of people. You don't live there. Your income is real, your plan is solid, and a local lender will see it. Banks will tell you that you need a perfect credit score and two years of tax returns and collateral they can sell in five minutes.
Credit unions and CDFIs will tell you what you actually need.
Listen to the ones in your county.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your actual income and have one year of records (pay stubs, 1099s, or bank deposits).
- 02Write down what you need the money for and how much.
Be specific.
- 03Pull your credit report (go to annualcreditreport.com—it's free, it's real) so you know what you're walking in with.
- 04Call the local credit union before you fill out any online form.
Talk to a human. Tell them what you need. That conversation is worth more than a pre-approval email from a bot.

Four doors worth knowing.
Walk through each one. Only one will fit your hand.

Don't fall into these traps.
Online lenders are fast because they do not care about you. A 48-hour turnaround usually means they are charging you interest you will not notice until year two. Payday loans and title loans hide their real cost in roll-over fees and 400% APR. Real lenders will tell you the APR in plain words. If you have to guess, keep walking.
Online lenders and loan apps promise same-day funding because they charge 25–40% APR, not because they love you.
Never use a car or home you don't fully own as collateral unless you are certain you can pay back the loan.
Payday and title loans trap you by letting you extend the loan instead of pay it off, doubling your real cost.
Everything below is set by North Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. North Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAX1.95% – 2.5%
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX5.0% state · 2.0% avg local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$74K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING94.6
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
