No institution is headquartered inside the Hyde County line.
That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 26 of South Dakota's 66 counties hold a door in this lane, and Hyde County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Hyde County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Hyde County is rural, which means big banks ignore it and interest rates climb fast. This guide shows you the actual doors open to you: credit unions, state lending programs, and CDFIs that understand agriculture and small business. You don't need perfect credit or a bank account they'll approve—you need the right intermediary.
It's a process, not a rejection.
Hyde County—High Plains country, population under 1,500, ag-heavy—sits outside the coverage map most national lenders care about. That's not a bug; it's a feature if you know where to look. Local and regional credit unions serve you better than Chase ever will.
State of South Dakota has rural financing programs.
Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) exist to reach people banks skip. The advantage: less red tape, more familiarity with how real people work out here.

Forget what the banks say.
Big banks will tell you that you need a pristine credit score, a 20% down payment, and a job title they recognize. They'll also charge you fees for everything and close your application before lunch if you don't fit their algorithm. Ignore that noise. Credit unions waive fees. CDFIs look at cash flow, not just a number.
SBA loans exist specifically to back what banks won't.
State programs in South Dakota (like the Rural Development program) have lower income thresholds and longer repayment terms. What matters: steady income (even if informal), collateral or a co-signer, and a clear reason for the loan. You can get financed. The bank just isn't the place.

Five things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your credit score (free at annualcreditreport.com—ignore the ads).
- 02Write down your last 3 years of income
Even if it's irregular. Spreadsheet, bank statements, Schedule C—whatever you have.
- 03Find a local credit union and open a membership account before you apply for anything else; it builds a relationship and often lowers rates.
- 04Get clear on what you need the money for—land, equipment, working capital, vehicle, or emergency cash.
- 05Bring all documents to your local SBA District Office (serving South Dakota) or your credit union.
No surprises, no mystery.

Don't fall into these traps.
Trap one: Payday lenders and online lenders charging 300%+ APR disguise themselves as 'fast cash'—they destroy your finances in weeks. Trap two: Loan brokers who 'guarantee' approval and charge upfront fees before you see paperwork—legitimate lenders never ask for money upfront. Trap three: Cosigning for someone you don't fully trust because you feel obligated—you become liable for 100% of the debt if they stop paying.
Online or storefront lenders offering 'fast cash' at 300%+ APR trap you in rollover debt cycles.
Loan brokers demanding money before showing you loan terms or paperwork are almost always scams.
Signing as a guarantor on someone else's loan makes you fully liable if they default, with no way out.
Everything below is set by South Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. South Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX4.2% state · 1.91% avg local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$69K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING93.4
