That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 26 of South Dakota's 66 counties hold a door in this lane, and Lyman County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Lyman County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Lyman County is rural, and that means big banks often ignore you—but real lending options exist if you know where to look. This guide shows you the local and regional lenders, CDFIs, and credit unions that actually work with solo contractors and small real-estate investors, plus the traps to avoid.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Lyman County, you're not a loan number. Banks in bigger towns treat you like one. The lenders and credit unions listed below know rural South Dakota—they understand your business, your land, your seasonal cash flow, and your neighbors.
They'll ask questions, but they're listening, not running you through a computer algorithm that spits out 'no' because you don't fit a template.
That relationship is your advantage. Use it.

Forget what the banks say.
A regional bank tells you that you need a 680 credit score, six months of tax returns, and a down payment in the bank for 90 days. A credit union or CDFI in South Dakota will look at your actual business—your equipment, your repeat customers, your land—and ask different questions.
They know that a contractor's income isn't a salary, and a real-estate investor's story doesn't fit the standard form.
The 'no' you got from First National isn't the only answer.

Three things you can't skip.
- 01Know your credit score
Not because you need it to be perfect, but because you need to know what you're walking in with. Get a free report at annualcreditreport.com (the real one, not a trick site).
- 02Gather your story
Two years of tax returns, bank statements for the last three months, and a one-page explanation of what you're borrowing for and why. Don't hide the bad stuff; explain it.
- 03Call the SBA district office in Pierre before you apply anywhere.
They'll tell you what programs exist in your county and what you actually qualify for. That call takes 20 minutes and saves you months of rejection.

Three doors worth knowing.
The first door is your local credit union—Oacoma-area credit unions and the South Dakota Credit Union Association (based in Pierre) can point you to lenders who know the region and won't treat you like a tourist.

Works through nonprofit partners across the country. A nonprofit lender that operates nationally — useful precisely where the local branch map runs out. Don't fall into these traps.
Online lenders that advertise on Facebook are often the same payday lenders wearing a new suit—they'll lend you $5,000 at 200% APR and call it a 'business loan.' Stay away. Don't let anyone promise you a loan for an upfront 'processing fee'—that's a theft, full stop. And don't borrow from a friend or family member unless you write it down and show them the terms; a handshake deal that goes wrong will cost you more than money.
Ads offering fast cash at high rates with no credit check are payday lenders hiding behind business-loan language; the APR is often 200% or higher.
Anyone who asks for money before approving a loan is stealing; legitimate lenders deduct fees from your loan amount or add them to your monthly payment.
A loan from a relative without written terms will destroy the relationship and won't hold up in court if something goes wrong.
Everything below is set by South Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. South Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX4.2% state · 1.91% avg local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$69K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING93.4
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
