How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Kings County is dairy and orchard country in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, with Hanford as its county seat, a naval air station at Lemoore, state prisons at Corcoran and Avenal, and an Interstate 5 stop at Kettleman City. Most small businesses here serve farms, dairies or the families who work them. This guide explains the kinds of business financing that exist, who qualifies on seasonal and crop-cycle income, what documents you need, which institutions are based here, the California rules that catch contractors and labor contractors, and the offers to walk away from.
It's a process, not a rejection.
Business financing comes in four shapes, and choosing the wrong one is where most of the damage happens.
- A term loan — a fixed amount on a fixed schedule. For a truck, a trailer, a tractor, a welding rig, a sprayer, a food truck build-out.
- A line of credit — an approved ceiling you draw from and repay, again and again. The tool for the gap between doing the work and getting paid for it.
- A microloan — a smaller loan, usually from a nonprofit lender, built for the business a bank's automated system declines. A person reads your file.
- A grant — money you do not repay. Real ones come from governments and foundations, are competitive, and never arrive by text message.
Kings County, home to about 152,000 people, has an economy shaped by water, soil and a few large public employers.
Dairy country. Dairies, the feed and silage crops that supply them, and the processing plants that turn milk into cheese and powder keep people working year-round. Around them works a ring of small businesses: milk and feed haulers, equipment mechanics, welders, veterinarians' helpers, manure and lagoon services, custom silage choppers.
The orchards and row crops. Pistachios, almonds, walnuts, processing tomatoes, cotton and alfalfa follow the season. Farm labor contractors, harvest crews, shakers and sweepers, irrigation installers and pest-control applicators all live on a calendar where income piles up at harvest and thins out in winter. That is a line-of-credit problem.
The public paycheck. Naval Air Station Lemoore, the state prisons at Corcoran and Avenal, the schools and the county government put steady wages into Hanford, Lemoore and Corcoran — wages that support restaurants, barbershops, auto repair, childcare and cleaning businesses.
The road economy. Kettleman City and the Highway 41 and 198 corridors serve truckers and travelers: fuel, tires, food, small motels.
One more local reality: in big-water years, the old Tulare Lake bed floods, and farms and the businesses that serve them can lose a season. Lenders who know this valley know that, too. Name your money shape before you call anyone.

Forget what the banks say.
Every lender asks the same four questions: can you repay, have you repaid before, how long have you been doing this, and does the business make sense here.
- 01**The farm labor contractor
** Your revenue arrives in waves at thinning, pruning and harvest, while payroll is due every week. A state farm labor contractor license, two years of tax returns and grower contracts make you readable. A line of credit sized to payroll is the right tool.
- 02**The ag service business
** Welders, mechanics, haulers, custom harvesters and applicators serving dairies and orchards. If you have regular customers, a list of them is almost as good as a contract. Equipment-heavy businesses should expect lenders to look closely at what the equipment is worth.
- 03**The dairy or orchard employee starting a side business.** Your steady paycheck is an asset; a lender may lean on it while the business is young.
- 04**The food truck
Taquería or panadería.** Lenders want a full year of sales and your health permits. A microlender is the likeliest yes for a first truck or first lease.
- 05**The cash-heavy storefront
** The obstacle is rarely credit. It is that the revenue never went through a business account. What passes through the account is what an underwriter can see.
- 06**The military spouse or veteran in Lemoore
** Frequent moves make long business histories hard; ask about veteran-focused SBA help through the SBDC.
- 07**The business under two years old
** Most banks decline. Credit unions and nonprofit lenders will at least read the file.

The doors worth knowing.
Kings County's door list is short. Our directory shows two credit unions based in Hanford, three larger credit unions with branches in the county, and no nonprofit business lender based inside the county line.

BEST FORBuying, repairing or refinancing a home, and a personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing.
Don't fall into these traps.
A phone call, money in two days, only bank statements required. It is not a loan — it is the sale of your future deposits at a discount, repaid by daily withdrawals that do not stop when harvest ends or the lakebed floods. It is the most common way a profitable valley business gets buried. Call a credit union first.
An unlicensed contractor in California may not be able to collect at all; an unlicensed farm labor contractor risks fines and losing growers.
A used tractor or sprayer financed at a high rate over a long term can outlive its usefulness. Read the total of payments and ask what you own at the end.
A legitimate lender takes its fee from the funded loan, not from your card in advance.
One broker can trigger a dozen hard inquiries. Apply yourself, to two or three named institutions.
California law bars notaries from advertising themselves as notarios. Nobody can guarantee you a license or a loan for a fee.
Real lenders do not have offers that expire at five o'clock.
Everything below is set by California, and it reads the same in every county in it. The 5 marks above are this county's own doors — who opens one is decided by them, not by the state.
The rules where you are.
LLCs and corporations register with the Secretary of State and file periodic statements of information. A sole proprietor using a business name files a fictitious business name statement with the county clerk. Cities issue their own business licenses, and sellers of taxable goods need a seller's permit.
California LLCs and corporations owe an annual minimum franchise tax even in a year they lose money. Budget for it before you form an LLC; many very small businesses start as sole proprietors for this reason.
California requires a Contractors State License Board license for construction work above a small-job limit, and an unlicensed contractor generally cannot sue to collect payment for the work. That is the most expensive rule in the state to ignore.
Anyone who recruits, supplies or pays farmworkers for growers needs a state farm labor contractor license from the Labor Commissioner and a federal registration. Growers and lenders both check.
Applicators need state licensing and must register with the county agricultural commissioner before working in the county.
On construction projects, subcontractors and suppliers generally must serve a preliminary notice early in the job to keep their mechanics lien rights. Missing it can cost you your best tool for getting paid.
California runs a loan guarantee program for small businesses through nonprofit partners and funds technical help through the SBDC network. The SBDC is the free front door.
The short version.
- 01
Kings County's small businesses run on the calendar of dairies, orchards and harvests, with steady public paychecks from the air station, the prisons and the schools underneath. Financing that fits that calendar — a line of credit for payroll at harvest, an equipment loan sized to the job, a Farm Service Agency loan for farm operations — helps. A merchant cash advance with daily withdrawals hurts.
- 02
Get your license in order first: contractors board, farm labor contractor or applicator, whichever fits. Run every dollar through a business checking account and build the document folder above. Then call the CDFI-designated credit union with a branch here and the county's own credit union in Hanford, and compare. If you file with an ITIN or your business is young, the national nonprofit lenders on this page were built for you. Use the free SBDC and SCORE help before you borrow.

Origen Capital is a directory, not a lender. We do not collect your information, we do not sell it, and we do not take applications. Use this page as a map, then work directly with a credit union, a licensed lender or a nonprofit community lender when you are ready.
