That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 31 of Montana's 56 counties hold a door in this lane, and Judith Basin County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Judith Basin County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Judith Basin County is ranch and agricultural land, and financing here means knowing the local credit unions and state programs before you walk into a bank. Solo contractors and small investors have better luck with SBA lenders, CDFI networks, and ag-friendly lenders that understand rural Montana. This guide shows you the actual doors open to you.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Judith Basin County, a banker you've never met will say no. A loan officer who knows your family, your land, your reputation, and your contractor crew will say yes to things banks won't touch. This is not cynicism—it's how rural Montana works.
Your credit union or local CDFI knows the county.
National lenders do not. Start there. Build that relationship first, paperwork second.

Forget what the banks say.
Banks in Lewistown or Helena are trained to reject small contractors and solo investors on formula alone. They will tell you your tax returns are 'too complicated' or your down payment is 'too small.' What they mean is: you don't fit the checkbox. That's not your fault.
Credit unions, SBA lenders, and CDFIs use judgment.
They talk to you. They ask why, not just how much. If a big bank said no, it doesn't mean no to everyone.

Three things you can't skip.
- 01A current tax return (or two years of bank statements if you're new).
- 02One-page description of what you're financing
Equipment, land, working capital, or renovation. Be specific.
- 03Know your cash flow
Not your revenue. Your actual monthly cash in and out. Lenders in rural Montana care about cash flow more than profit because that's what keeps you alive. Write these down before you call anyone.

BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Missoula, Montana. An SBA intermediary, so the money is federal microloan money and the decision is made locally rather than by a national credit box.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in New York, New York. Microloans for women entrepreneurs. Requires photo ID and proof of address — no SSN requirement. Branches in major metro areas. National in reach and nonprofit in structure, which is why it can take an application from a county with no branch in it. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business — with no social security number.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. A national nonprofit lender that works across state lines, so where you live is not what decides whether you get an answer. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.
Don't fall into these traps.
Avoid lenders who charge you upfront fees before approval. Avoid brokers who promise to 'shop your loan'—they collect fees from multiple lenders while slowing you down. And don't borrow from equipment dealers at their in-house rates. Go to a credit union or CDFI first. Their rates will be lower, and you keep the relationship.
Lenders who charge application, origination, or 'processing' fees before you're approved are red flags—legitimate lenders charge fees only after approval.
Loan brokers who promise to 'shop your application' to many lenders often collect fees from each one while slowing your approval and raising your rate.
Buying equipment with in-house dealer financing locks you into higher rates; a CDFI or credit union loan will be cheaper and keeps your relationship separate.
Everything below is set by Montana, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 4 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- BUSINESS TAX6.75%
What Montana charges on top of federal. It is the first thing a lender reconciles when your numbers do not match your tax return.
- CORPORATE INCOME TAX6.75%
It depends on how the business is registered. A sole proprietor almost never pays it — worth knowing which side of that line you are on before you apply.
- SALES TAXNone
What you collect on a job, and what your materials cost. It is the gap between a bid that holds and one that does not.
- WHERE THE MONEY IS HEREAgriculture & Ranching · Mining & Natural Resources · Tourism & Outdoor
Montana's three biggest sectors. A local lender reads your file against them — a trade that serves these is a trade they already understand.
