That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 31 of Montana's 56 counties hold a door in this lane, and Meagher County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Meagher County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Meagher County is rural, and rural financing works differently than what you see in Billings or Missoula. You have state-backed programs, a working credit union, and regional CDFIs that understand ag, ranching, and small construction. Banks will say no; the intermediaries here will ask real questions.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Meagher County—population under 2,000—financing isn't about a credit score and a form. It's about who knows your name and what you're building. Local lenders here (the credit union, the CDFI partners) want to understand your land, your equipment, your track record.
They'll move slower than a bank, but they'll move.
Banks treat you like a number. Local intermediaries treat you like a neighbor with a real plan.

Forget what the banks say.
Banks rejected you because you don't fit their template: maybe you're self-employed, maybe your credit took a hit, maybe you work in ranching or seasonal construction. Banks are not the only game in Montana.
The Montana Community Development Corporation, the statewide credit union network, and SBA-backed lenders exist because banks turn people away.
Those rejections aren't final. They're redirects.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know what you're borrowing for
Land, equipment, working capital, or growth.
- 02Gather proof
Tax returns, business plan, or proof of income (ITIN works).
- 03Reach out to your local credit union or the CDFI partner that serves your county before you knock on a bank door.
- 04
Ask every lender about Montana-specific programs (like the Beginning Farmer Loan Guaranty Program if you're starting out) and SBA loans they can structure.

Four doors worth knowing.

BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Missoula, Montana. An SBA intermediary, so the money is federal microloan money and the decision is made locally rather than by a national credit box.
BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in New York, New York. Microloans for women entrepreneurs. Requires photo ID and proof of address — no SSN requirement. Branches in major metro areas. National in reach and nonprofit in structure, which is why it can take an application from a county with no branch in it. BEST FORWorking capital, equipment and payroll for a small business — with no social security number.Based in San Francisco, California. Zero-interest lending circles and credit building. SSN or ITIN accepted. Works through nonprofit partners across the country. A national nonprofit lender that works across state lines, so where you live is not what decides whether you get an answer. It will open an application with an ITIN instead of a social security number.
BEST FORA personal loan, or building a credit file from nothing — with no social security number.
Don't fall into these traps.
Avoid online lenders promising fast cash—they charge 200%+ APR and will drain your business. Don't let a broker or 'facilitator' collect fees upfront; legitimate lenders deduct fees from the loan amount or collect at close. Don't give up after one bank says no; that's exactly when you call the credit union or CDFI.
Fast-approval lenders charging 150–300% APR, marketed as 'business loans' but structured as predatory cash advances.
Intermediaries collecting $500–$2,000 upfront to 'arrange' a loan, leaving you out the money if the loan doesn't close.
Stopping your search after a single bank rejection instead of calling the credit union or CDFI; most rural borrowers succeed on their third or fourth door.
Everything below is set by Montana, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 4 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- BUSINESS TAX6.75%
What Montana charges on top of federal. It is the first thing a lender reconciles when your numbers do not match your tax return.
- CORPORATE INCOME TAX6.75%
It depends on how the business is registered. A sole proprietor almost never pays it — worth knowing which side of that line you are on before you apply.
- SALES TAXNone
What you collect on a job, and what your materials cost. It is the gap between a bid that holds and one that does not.
- WHERE THE MONEY IS HEREAgriculture & Ranching · Mining & Natural Resources · Tourism & Outdoor
Montana's three biggest sectors. A local lender reads your file against them — a trade that serves these is a trade they already understand.
