The doors in Meagher County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Meagher County is rural and tight-knit—big banks often miss what you need. This guide points you to credit unions, community lenders, and SBA programs that understand ranching, seasonal income, and contractor cash flow. You do not need perfect credit or a W-2 to qualify. Start with the local intermediary layer first.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Meagher County, your bank account is part of your story. Local lenders know that. They see seasonal ranching income, contractor income that moves around, and family operations that banks in Helena or Billings can't read on a form.
A CDFI or credit union talks to you first and looks at your whole picture—not just a credit score.
You are not a number here. Build that relationship before you need the money.

Forget what the bank say.
Big banks say you need a fixed salary, perfect credit, and a two-year tax history. None of that is true for you. Credit unions and community development lenders use different tools: they look at bank statements, seasonal patterns, equipment you own, and what you've built. The SBA backs loans specifically for people like you—self-employed, with variable income, with collateral that matters locally.
Stop asking permission from a bank that doesn't know you.
Ask the intermediaries who do.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your cash flow story
Write down your income for the last 24 months, month by month—ranching seasons, contractor jobs, whatever you do.
- 02Understand what you own
Land, equipment, vehicles, inventory—anything with resale value.
- 03Check your credit report for free at annualcreditreport.com and dispute anything wrong before you apply.
- 04Talk to a local lender first to hear what they need.
Do not fill out ten applications at once. One conversation with the right person saves you months.

Four doors worth knowing.
1. Stockman Bank of Lewistown: Located in your county seat, Stockman Bank is a community bank that understands ranching and agriculture.

BEST FORCommunity lending where a bank has already said no, and working capital, equipment and payroll for a small business.Based in Missoula, Montana. An SBA intermediary, so the money is federal microloan money and the decision is made locally rather than by a national credit box.

Don't fall into these traps.
Watch for these three: (1) Online lenders that promise instant approval—they charge 50% interest and trap you in a cycle. (2) Loan brokers who say they will help you but charge upfront fees before you see a lender. (3) Anybody who says your seasonal income disqualifies you—it doesn't. Seasonal income is normal in Meagher County. A real lender averages it or looks at 24 months of statements.
Online lenders offer fast cash at 50%–400% annual interest, then trap you in roll-over debt before you realize the cost.
Loan brokers charge you hundreds upfront to 'help' you get approved, then disappear if you are declined.
Some lenders reject ranchers and contractors on the spot, not realizing that seasonal income is predictable and bankable—shop locally instead.
Everything below is set by Montana, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 4 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. Montana sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAX4.7% – 5.9%
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAXNone
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$66K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING102.9
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
