That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 26 of South Dakota's 66 counties hold a door in this lane, and Corson County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Corson County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Corson County is ranch country, and banks here often say no to solo contractors and small real-estate players. This guide walks you to the actual doors that open: local credit unions, state CDFIs, and the SBA district office in South Dakota that knows agricultural lending. You have options—you just need to know where to look.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Corson County, a bank loan isn't just paperwork. It's about who knows you and whether they believe in what you're doing. That's why a community bank teller or credit union loan officer matters more than a national bank website.
They can see your ranch, your work, your reputation.
They also have room to move on terms that a distant corporate underwriter never will. If you've been rejected by Wells Fargo or Chase, it's often because those places can't see you. Local doesn't mean easy—it means fair, and it means they ask *why* instead of just running a score.

Forget what the national banks say.
National banks in Corson County are trained to say no to self-employed contractors without a W-2, to investors with irregular income, and to anyone without a long credit history. Their computers have rules; their branches have no authority to break them. But that's their rules, not the law.
Credit unions, community banks, and CDFIs in South Dakota use human judgment.
They look at cash flow, collateral, and character—the three things that actually matter for a loan. If you got a hard no from a big bank, step away and call a credit union or state CDFI the same week. Don't take the rejection as final.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your own numbers
Last two years of tax returns, current bank statements, and a list of what you own (land, equipment, vehicles).
- 02Pick the right lender type for your situation
Credit union if you're a local resident, CDFI if you need flexibility on ITIN or irregular income, SBA district office if you need a guaranteed loan for a property or business expansion.
- 03Prepare a simple one-page summary of what you need the money for and why you can pay it back.
- 04Call before you go in
Tell them your situation. They'll tell you if you're in the ballpark before you spend a morning filling forms.

Four doors worth knowing.
First, the South Dakota CDFI Coalition connects you to lenders statewide who work with contractors and investors the big banks won't touch; they're ITIN-friendly and flexible on income documentation.

Don't fall into these traps.
Trap one: don't assume you're blacklisted because one bank said no. Each lender uses different rules. A rejection at one institution is not a permanent mark. Trap two: don't borrow from a payday lender or online title lender, even if the paperwork looks fast. You'll pay 200–400% interest and end up trapped. Trap three: don't skip the SBA district office if you're borrowing more than $50,000 or buying property. Their loan guarantee cuts your risk and the lender's, which means better terms for you. Trap four: don't apply to five lenders at once. Each application hits your credit. Apply to one, wait a week, then try the next if they say no.
Each lender uses different underwriting standards; a 'no' from Chase or Wells Fargo does not mean a credit union or CDFI will reject you.
Online payday, title, and installment loans charge 200–400% annual interest and are designed to roll over into new debt; avoid them even if fast cash tempts you.
Each new lender inquiry lowers your score; apply to one lender, wait for their decision, then move to the next if rejected.
Everything below is set by South Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. South Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX4.2% state · 1.91% avg local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$69K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
