That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 26 of South Dakota's 66 counties hold a door in this lane, and Haakon County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Haakon County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Haakon County is rural, and banks don't always fit your situation. This guide shows you the local and regional lenders who understand contractors, small investors, and people building equity in land. You'll find credit unions, CDFI options, and SBA resources that actually work in western South Dakota.
It's a network, not a rejection.
When a bank says no, it doesn't mean you can't borrow. It means you haven't found the right door yet. Haakon County is served by a real network of lenders—credit unions, community development organizations, and SBA-backed lenders—who speak the language of contractors, ranchers, and small investors.
These lenders know that a bank's credit score isn't the whole story.
They look at your land, your equipment, your track record, and your relationships in the community. A rejection from one lender is information, not a sentence.

Forget what the banks say.
Banks are not your only option, and they are not the cheapest. They are not the fastest, and they don't understand your business the way a credit union does. Banks ask for perfect credit, clean tax returns, and W-2s—and then they say no anyway.
CDFIs and community lenders ask different questions.
They ask: Do you have collateral? Can you show your cash flow? Do you know people in Haakon County who will vouch for you? Those are the questions that matter. A bank might take six months and say no. A credit union or CDFI might take three weeks and say yes—at a better rate.

Five things. Get them in order.
- 01Know what you own
Land, equipment, trucks, tools—these are collateral. Write them down.
- 02Organize your cash flow for the last two years, even if it's rough.
- 03Find a credit union or CDFI in or near Haakon County and talk to them before you apply anywhere else.
- 04Bring a letter from someone who knows your work or your business—a supplier, a customer, a neighbor.
- 05Ask about SBA backing
If a lender says they work with the SBA, that often means lower down payments and better terms for you.

Don't fall into these traps.
Avoid lenders who ask for money upfront. Legitimate lenders charge fees at closing, not before. Avoid anybody offering a 'guaranteed' loan before they've looked at your finances—that's a sign they're not really underwriting you. Stay away from title loans and payday lenders, even if they say they work with contractors. They charge rates that will trap you, not free you.
Any lender asking for money before closing is not legitimate; real fees come at closing, not before.
If a lender promises approval without reviewing your finances, they're either scamming you or hiding predatory terms.
Title loans, invoice factoring at 40%+ rates, and 'emergency' loans for contractors are payday traps in disguise; the APR will bury you.
Everything below is set by South Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. South Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX4.2% state · 1.91% avg local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$69K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING93.4
