That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 26 of South Dakota's 66 counties hold a door in this lane, and Harding County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Harding County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Harding County is rural and tight-knit, which means the national bank playbook doesn't always fit. This guide shows you where local lenders, credit unions, and state programs actually say yes—and which traps to avoid. You have options beyond the big chains.
It's a relationship, not a rejection.
When a bank in Harding County turns you down, it is not personal—it is a policy. But that does not mean no one will lend to you.
Local credit unions, farm credit associations, and community lenders in northwestern South Dakota work differently.
They know your county. They understand that a solo contractor's income looks lumpy on a standard form, and that a rancher's or small real-estate investor's cash flow shifts with seasons and market moves. They also know you are not going anywhere. That matters. Start with the lenders who know the land and the people on it.

Forget what the big banks say.
The megabanks have rules that treat Harding County like a number on a spreadsheet. Their automated systems, their debt-to-income ratios, their proof-of-income requirements—all of it is designed for W-2 workers in dense metros. You are not that.
When they say no, what they mean is no according to their particular model.
It does not mean you cannot borrow. It means you need to walk into a lender that actually knows how to read a contractor's books, a rancher's grazing logs, or a small investor's repair receipts. That is what local lenders do.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Get your paperwork clean
If you are self-employed, lenders will want two years of tax returns, bank statements, and a clear profit-and-loss picture. If you work in construction, ranching, or property rehab, organize your receipts and invoices.
- 02Know your credit number
You can get a free report at annualcreditreport.com. Understand what is on it and be ready to explain old missteps.
- 03Decide what you actually need to borrow and why.
A lender wants to hear a purpose, not just a number.
- 04Bring proof of ties to the county
Property ownership, business license, local bank account, customer list, or clients in the area. Local lenders want to know you are rooted here.

Four doors worth knowing.
1. First National Bank of Faith (Faith, SD) – Serves Harding County directly with personal and small-business lending; ask for their agriculture and business loan officers who understand local cash flow. 2. Northwest Farm Credit Services (regional; serves Harding County) – Specializes in agricultural and rural real-estate financing for ranchers and farmers; low rates for land and equipment. 3. South Dakota Credit Union Network and Black Hills Credit Union (regional coverage into Harding County) – Member-owned, often more flexible on income documentation than banks; ask about personal loans and small-business lines. 4. South Dakota Microloan Initiative (state-level, serves Harding County) – Offers loans under $50,000 for small businesses and self-employed contractors; works with local intermediaries; slower approval but cheaper than private lenders.

Don't fall into these traps.
Watch for three common mistakes. One: assuming you cannot borrow because one bank said no—take that as a signal to call a credit union or CDFI, not as final judgment. Two: overpaying for convenience—online lenders and tribal lenders will approve you fast, but the interest rates and fees will eat your profit for two years. Three: borrowing without a clear plan to repay—Harding County is small; your reputation matters, and a defaulted loan will follow you. Borrow what you can reasonably repay in your business cycle.
Tribal lenders and online platforms approve you in hours but charge 36–99% APR, turning a $10,000 loan into $15,000 in repayment.
A bank prequalification letter is not a commitment; they can deny you at final underwriting, and that rejection counts against you with other lenders.
Many solo contractors do not know state microloan programs exist; they jump to online lenders without trying the cheaper, slower local option first.
Everything below is set by South Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. South Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX4.2% state · 1.91% avg local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$69K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING93.4
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
