No institution is headquartered inside the Jackson County line.
That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 26 of South Dakota's 66 counties hold a door in this lane, and Jackson County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Jackson County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Jackson County is rural, and big banks won't always understand your situation. This guide points you to local credit unions, state programs, and regional CDFIs that work with contractors and small investors who have been rejected elsewhere. You have real options—you just need to know where to look.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
Banks treat you like a number. Local lenders in Jackson County know your county, your neighbors, your work. When you sit down with a credit union officer or a CDFI loan officer, they can see past a single bad month or a thin credit file. They ask questions. They listen. That's the difference.
You're not trying to fit into their box—you're building something together.
That takes time, but it's honest.

Forget what the banks say.
The big chain banks told you no. They said your credit score is too low, your income is too variable, your collateral isn't clean enough.
Those rules exist to protect their shareholders, not to help you.
Regional credit unions and CDFIs in South Dakota use different standards. They look at your whole picture: your track record, your character, your plans. A contractor with seasonal income or an investor with irregular cash flow isn't a problem—it's normal. Stop listening to rejection letters from places that were never going to understand you in the first place.

Three things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your credit report before you walk into any lender's office.
Get a free copy at annualcreditreport.com. Dispute any errors—there are real mistakes on real files.
- 02Gather your last two years of tax returns (1040, Schedule C if self-employed) and your last three months of bank statements.
Lenders need to see cash flow, not just a number.
- 03Write down what you need the money for and how you'll use it.
'I need $8,000 for a truck to run my contracting business' is stronger than 'I need a personal loan.' Be specific.

Don't fall into these traps.
Payday and title loans are everywhere. They're fast and they wreck you. Same with buy-now-pay-later apps—they feel like free money until the interest kicks in and you can't breathe. Online lenders often hide fees in the fine print and collect from your bank account before you see it coming. Ask every lender: What is the total cost? What are all the fees? Can I pay it off early without a penalty? If they won't answer clearly, walk.
Payday loans charge 400% APR or higher; you borrow $500, owe $575 two weeks later, can't pay, roll it over, and six months later you've paid $2,000 for that $500.
Some lenders charge you a fee if you pay off your loan early—they want the interest, not your success.
Online lenders ask for access to your bank account and claim they'll only verify income, then overdraft you or take money without clear notice.
Everything below is set by South Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. South Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAXNone
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX4.2% state · 1.91% avg local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$69K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING93.4
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
