The doors in Calhoun County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Calhoun County is small, rural, and banks here often say no to contractors and investors they don't know. But that doesn't mean no. Local credit unions, state-backed programs, and a regional CDFI network exist to say yes when bigger banks won't. Start with the intermediaries—they speak your language and know your county.
It's a network, not a bank.
When you walk into a bank in Calhoun County, you're competing with their rulebook. A CDFI, a credit union, an SBA district office, or a community lender operates on relationship and local knowledge.
They're not trying to turn you down—they're trained to say yes to people banks rejected.
Think of your financing as a three-step walk: first, the local intermediary (credit union, CDFI, or SBA); second, the state program that backs them; third, the capital. Banks are step three. Start at step one.

Forget what the banks say.
Banks in small counties like Calhoun often use a single credit score and collateral grid. If you don't fit the box, they say no. But 'no from a bank' is not 'no in the market.' A CDFI will look at your cash flow, your relationships, your work history—not just your score. An SBA loan officer will pre-screen you for free and tell you what's real.
A credit union will remember you showed up and paid your bills.
The bank's no doesn't end your search. It starts it.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your loan size
Contractors and small RE investors in Calhoun typically need $25,000 to $500,000. That range changes which door opens first.
- 02Gather your last two years of tax returns or P&L statements—even a simple spreadsheet counts.
- 03Write down what you're using the money for
Equipment, property down payment, working capital, refinance. Be specific.
- 04Check if you have an ITIN
EIN, or SSN—it determines which lenders even look at your application. Do these four first. Everything else follows.

Four doors worth knowing.
First door: Mountain Laurel CDFI (serves West Virginia, including Calhoun County). They lend $10,000 to $250,000 to small businesses and real-estate investors and accept ITIN applicants.

Don't fall into these traps.
Avoid predatory lending under a new name: if a lender promises 'bad credit okay' and charges 18% or higher, walk out. Avoid brokers who collect a fee upfront before introducing you to a real lender—legitimate CDFIs and credit unions don't work that way. Avoid lenders who won't put the terms in writing before you sign anything. Small lenders are real, but they're still lenders: read the paper, ask questions, and get a second opinion from a nonprofit financial counselor before committing.
Lenders calling themselves 'alternative' or 'fast approval' that charge 15–25% APR are not alternatives—they're traps disguised as solutions.
If a lender or broker demands payment before connecting you to capital, you're paying twice and may not get funded.
Any lender unwilling to put interest rate, repayment schedule, and collateral terms in writing before signing is not trustworthy.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. West Virginia sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- BUSINESS TAX6.5%
What West Virginia charges on top of federal. It is the first thing a lender reconciles when your numbers do not match your tax return.
- CORPORATE INCOME TAX6.5%
It depends on how the business is registered. A sole proprietor almost never pays it — worth knowing which side of that line you are on before you apply.
- SALES TAX6.0% state · 0.55% avg local
What you collect on a job, and what your materials cost. It is the gap between a bid that holds and one that does not.
- WHERE THE MONEY IS HERECoal & Energy · Chemicals & Manufacturing · Tourism & Outdoor
West Virginia's three biggest sectors. A local lender reads your file against them — a trade that serves these is a trade they already understand.
