How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.

What Is Small Business Financing?
Small business financing is money you borrow — or receive as a grant — to start, grow, or stabilize a business. It can cover equipment, inventory, working capital, real estate, or a gap between jobs on a contract. In Fayette County, the most common forms are:
- 01**Small business loans**
Lump-sum funds repaid over time with interest, offered by banks, credit unions, and CDFIs.
- 02**Lines of credit**
Flexible borrowing up to a set limit, useful for contractors with irregular income.
- 03**Microloans**
Smaller loans (often under $50,000) from nonprofit lenders designed for early-stage businesses or sole proprietors.
- 04**SBA-guaranteed loans**
Loans made by local lenders but partially backed by the U.S. Small Business Administration, which lowers the lender's risk and often means better terms for you.
- 05**Grants**
Money you do not repay, typically from state programs, foundations, or economic development agencies.

Forget what the banks say.
Fayette County sits in the New River Gorge region of southern West Virginia. Its economy blends outdoor tourism (fueled by New River Gorge National Park), small-scale construction and trades, agriculture, and a growing base of remote workers and small investors buying rural property.
You may qualify for business financing if you:
- Have operated a business or been self-employed for at least 6–12 months (some programs accept startups)
- Can show income through tax returns, bank statements, or invoices — even if income is irregular
- Have a business plan or a clear description of how you will use the funds
- Have a Social Security Number (SSN) *or* an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) — ITIN-friendly lenders do exist and are listed below
- Have some personal credit history, though minimum scores vary widely by lender
Local economic context matters. If you are a contractor building vacation rentals near Fayetteville, a guide outfitter in Oak Hill, or a landlord rehabbing rental properties in the county, lenders familiar with the New River Gorge market understand your business model better than a national online lender ever will. Always start locally.
Startups: Some CDFIs and microlenders will work with you before your business is one year old, especially if you have relevant experience or training.

Get your papers in order.
Every lender is different, but gathering these documents before you apply saves time and shows lenders you are organized:
Personal documents:
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or consular ID)
- Social Security Number or ITIN
- Two years of personal tax returns (or 1–2 years if newer in business)
- Three to six months of personal bank statements
Business documents:
- Business license or registration (West Virginia Secretary of State)
- Employer Identification Number (EIN) — free to obtain at IRS.gov
- Two years of business tax returns (if available)
- Three to six months of business bank statements
- Profit and loss statement (even a simple spreadsheet works for microloans)
- List of current contracts, invoices, or clients
For real-estate or equipment loans:
- Property address and current value estimate
- Lease agreements (if applicable)
- Equipment quotes or invoices
Tip for ITIN holders: Bring your ITIN letter from the IRS and any documentation of consistent income. Many local CDFIs and credit unions accept ITINs and are accustomed to working with immigrants and mixed-status households.

Don't fall into these traps.
Not every lender has your best interest at heart. Here are warning signs to watch for — especially as a solo contractor or small real-estate investor in a rural county:
These are not loans — they are advances on your future revenue. They often carry effective APRs of 60–300%, can drain your bank account daily, and are not well-regulated. Avoid unless you fully understand the true cost and have no other option.
Any lender who says 'this offer expires in 24 hours' or 'you have to decide today' is using a pressure tactic. Legitimate lenders do not rush you. Take your time.
Be very cautious of any lender who requires you to pay a fee before you receive your loan. While application fees are normal, large upfront 'processing' or 'insurance' fees on loans that are not yet approved are a red flag.
Some online lenders target rural borrowers with high-rate products. They may approve quickly, but the cost can be far higher than a local credit union or CDFI. Always compare the APR, not just the monthly payment.
If anyone suggests you sign over your property deed as 'collateral' in an informal arrangement — not through a licensed title company and formal mortgage — walk away.
In West Virginia, most lenders must be licensed through the WV Division of Financial Institutions (dfi.wv.gov). You can verify a lender's license on their website before sharing personal financial information.
Start with the WV SBDC for free advising, then approach a local credit union, CDFI, or Fayette County National Bank. These institutions know the county and are built to serve — not extract.
The rules where you are.
West Virginia has several state-level programs and regulations worth knowing before you apply:
You must register your business with the West Virginia Secretary of State before most lenders will approve a loan. LLCs, sole proprietors, and corporations all register at sos.wv.gov. Registration fees are modest.
If you perform construction, electrical, plumbing, or HVAC work in Fayette County, the state requires a contractor's license through the WV Division of Labor. Having an active license improves your financing profile significantly.
The West Virginia Economic Development Authority offers direct loans and loan guarantees to small businesses, including manufacturers, tourism-related businesses, and real-estate developers. Fayette County qualifies under several rural and distressed-area designations that can mean better loan terms.
Parts of Fayette County are federally designated Opportunity Zones, which can attract investors and may open additional funding channels for qualifying real-estate projects.
The 2020 establishment of New River Gorge as a national park has drawn new state and federal economic development attention to the region. Fayette County businesses in outdoor recreation, hospitality, food service, and trades may qualify for targeted grant and loan programs. Check with the WV Department of Commerce for current offerings.
West Virginia has usury laws that cap interest rates on consumer loans. Business loans are not always covered, so carefully review your Annual Percentage Rate (APR) on any business loan offer.
