That is not a gap in this page, and it is not unusual: 34 of North Dakota's 53 counties hold a door in this lane, and Hettinger County is not one of them. What does serve it is below, by name and by town.
The doors in Hettinger County.
The CDFIs, credit unions, and microlenders that actually say yes — county by county, in two languages. We are not a lender. Nobody paid to be listed. And where a county has no good doors, we say so.

How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
Hettinger County is ranch and farm country, and financing here works differently than in Bismarck or Fargo. You won't find a CDFI on every corner, but you have solid credit unions, SBA connections through Dickinson, and state-level agricultural lenders who understand rural operations. This guide shows you the actual doors that open for contractors and small real-estate investors—and the traps that close them.
It's a relationship, not a transaction.
In Hettinger County, lenders know that your word and your track record matter more than a perfect credit score. Banks in larger towns treat you as a file number.
Credit unions and ag lenders here treat you as a neighbor.
If you've been self-employed, own rental property, or run a small operation, a local credit union will ask about your business, not just pull your report. Start there. You'll spend less time proving yourself and more time building something real.

Forget what the big banks say.
Wells Fargo or Chase will reject you because your income doesn't fit their template or your credit dipped during a slow season. That doesn't mean you can't borrow. Regional and local lenders in North Dakota—especially credit unions and SBA-backed programs—use common sense.
They'll look at cash flow over two years, not one month.
They'll consider seasonal income if you can show the pattern. The 'no' from a national bank is not the final word.

Four things. Get them in order.
- 01Know your credit score and pull your report at annualcreditreport.com (free, federal law).
- 02Gather your last two years of tax returns and bank statements—that's your real story.
- 03Call the SBA District Office in Bismarck (701-250-4303) and ask about local SBA lenders; they have a list.
- 04Visit or call the nearest credit union and ask if they work with contractors or small investors in your situation.
Do these four things before you talk to anyone else.

Four doors worth knowing.
Each one opens differently, and one is right for you.

Don't fall into these traps.
Rural North Dakota is targeted by predatory lenders who know banks won't touch you. Know the three worst holes: bad title loans, bad merchant cash advances, and bad payday loans dressed up as 'business lines.' If someone promises instant approval and tells you to sign digitally without sitting down first, walk away. If the interest rate isn't written down in plain English before you sign, it's a trap.
Lender takes your truck or equipment as collateral for fast cash at 200%+ annual interest; most borrowers lose the collateral and the money.
Lender advances cash against future sales or income at terms that look simple but trap you in a cycle of rolling debt.
A 'business line of credit' that is really a payday loan in disguise: high interest, short term, automatic renewal, designed to trap you.
Everything below is set by North Dakota, and it reads the same in every county in it. Who opens the door is not: 2 of the 3 above will take an ITIN instead of a social security number.
The rules where you are.
None of this is set by a lender. North Dakota sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.
- STATE INCOME TAX1.95% – 2.5%
What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.
- SALES TAX5.0% state · 2.0% avg local
What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.
- MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$74K
Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.
- COST OF LIVING94.6
National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
