How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
This guide helps residents of Harrison County, West Virginia — including solo contractors, small real-estate investors, and Spanish-speaking community members — understand personal financing options available close to home. It focuses on local credit unions, community development financial institutions (CDFIs), and state-backed programs that are accessible and fair. Federal programs like SBA loans are included as helpful background, but the real emphasis is on the local people and offices that can work with you face to face. Read through each section at your own pace, and never feel pressured to sign anything right away.
What Is Personal Financing?
Personal financing covers any loan, line of credit, or funding arrangement meant for an individual — not a big corporation. In Harrison County, this includes personal installment loans, small home-improvement loans, auto loans, and in some cases small-business microloans for sole proprietors and single-member LLCs.
These products help you cover a specific need — fixing a roof, buying a reliable truck for your contracting work, or bridging a gap between paychecks — and you pay them back over a set period, usually with a fixed monthly payment.
Personal financing is different from a credit card (which is revolving) and different from a mortgage (which is secured by real estate and governed by its own rules). Understanding what type of product you actually need is the first step to finding the right lender and avoiding unnecessary fees.

Who Qualifies in Harrison County?
Harrison County's economy is built around healthcare (United Hospital Center is one of the largest employers), education (Clarksburg and Bridgeport school systems), small contracting and trades businesses, and retail. This shapes who lenders here are used to working with.
Steady employees at local hospitals, schools, or government offices typically qualify for the broadest range of personal loan products because lenders see regular payroll income as low risk.
Solo contractors and self-employed tradespeople — electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, landscapers — can qualify too, but lenders will want to see a consistent income history, usually two years of tax returns or bank statements.
ITIN holders (individuals who do not have a Social Security number but file taxes using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) are welcome at select local lenders. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to borrow money responsibly. See Section 4 for lenders that explicitly work with ITIN borrowers.
New residents and people rebuilding credit can often access starter products like secured loans or credit-builder accounts at local credit unions before moving on to larger personal loans.
A general rule: if you have a documented, repeating source of income and can show you manage your existing obligations, there is likely a local option for you.

Get your papers in order.
Every lender is a little different, but here is a practical checklist for a personal loan application in Harrison County:
Identity
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport, or consular ID card)
- Social Security card — or your ITIN letter from the IRS if you are an ITIN borrower
Proof of Income
- Two most recent pay stubs (if employed)
- Two most recent years of federal tax returns — Form 1040, including Schedule C if self-employed
- Three to six months of bank statements (many lenders now require this regardless of employment type)
- 1099 forms if you do contract work
Proof of Address
- Utility bill, lease agreement, or mortgage statement showing your Harrison County address
Existing Debts
- A list of current loans, car payments, credit cards, or child-support obligations helps lenders calculate your debt-to-income ratio
For Home-Improvement Loans
- Contractor estimate or invoice
- Proof of homeownership (deed or property tax statement)
Bring originals and make one copy of everything before your appointment. Keep your copies in a safe place at home.

Don't fall into these traps.
Harrison County, like many rural areas, sees its share of financial products that look helpful but can leave borrowers worse off. Here is what to watch for:
Very High APRs Disguised as Fees
Some online lenders advertise a low monthly payment but bury a 99%–200% APR in the fine print. Always ask for the APR — the Annual Percentage Rate — before signing. Under WV law, most legitimate lenders cannot exceed 18% APR, so anything dramatically higher should raise a red flag.
"We Don't Check Credit" Offers
No-credit-check loans almost always come with extremely high rates or short repayment windows that are hard to meet. Legitimate credit-builder products do exist, but they work differently — they report your payments to help you build a history rather than skipping that process entirely.
Rent-to-Own Stores
Furniture or electronics "rent-to-own" stores are common in north-central WV and can seem affordable week to week. Over time, the total cost often far exceeds the item's retail price. If you need an appliance, explore a small personal loan from your credit union first.
Deed or Title as Collateral
Be very careful about any loan that asks you to sign over the deed to your home or the title to your car as collateral for a small personal loan. This is sometimes called a "title loan" or a deed-in-lieu arrangement and can result in losing your property over a small debt.
Urgent Pressure or Limited-Time Offers
A legitimate lender will never pressure you to sign that day. If anyone tells you the offer expires in hours or that you need to decide right now, walk away. Good financing deals do not require panic.
Everything below is set by West Virginia, and it reads the same in every county in it. The 6 marks above are this county's own doors — who opens one is decided by them, not by the state.
The rules where you are.
West Virginia has its own consumer lending laws that give you protections beyond federal minimums. Here is what matters most:
Interest Rate Cap
West Virginia caps interest rates on consumer loans. Under WV Code § 47-6-5, most lenders may not charge more than 18% APR on supervised loans to individuals. Some exemptions exist for licensed small-loan companies, but the cap still provides meaningful protection compared to states with no ceiling.
Payday Lending Is Effectively Banned
West Virginia does not license traditional payday lenders. This is a significant consumer protection. If someone calls their product a "payday loan" or a "cash advance" and they are operating physically in WV, they may be violating state law. Online payday lenders sometimes try to skirt this by claiming to operate from another state — be cautious.
Right to Cancel
For certain loans secured by your home, federal law (TILA/Regulation Z) gives you three business days to cancel without penalty. Some WV home-improvement contracts have additional cancellation rights.
Credit Reporting Disputes
If a WV lender reports incorrect information to the credit bureaus, you can dispute it through the bureau and also file a complaint with the West Virginia Division of Financial Institutions at (304) 558-2294. They regulate state-chartered banks and credit unions.
No Wage Garnishment for Most Consumer Debts
West Virginia has strong wage-garnishment exemptions. Most consumer debts (other than student loans, taxes, and child support) face meaningful limits on how much of your paycheck can be taken. This does not mean you should ignore a debt, but it is useful to know if you are in financial hardship.
The short version.
- 01
If you live in Harrison County and need personal financing, you have real local options — you do not have to rely on expensive online lenders or out-of-state services.
- 02
Start with WV United Federal Credit Union in Clarksburg for personal loans and credit-builder products. If your need is tied to your home or a small business, reach out to a CDFI like the WV Community Development Hub or Fahe, or stop by the SBA West Virginia District Office in Clarksburg for free advice. If you are an ITIN holder, ask lenders directly — some will work with you, and products like Mission Asset Fund's lending circles can help you build credit.
- 03
West Virginia's consumer protections are genuinely strong compared to many states — payday loans are effectively illegal, and most personal loan rates are capped at 18% APR. Use those protections by staying alert to any lender that charges far above that or pressures you to act fast.
- 04
Take your time. Bring your documents. Ask questions. You deserve a loan that works for your life — not one that makes it harder.
