How to read this list.
We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.
A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.
Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Jun 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.
This guide helps solo contractors, small investors, and everyday residents of Cabell County, West Virginia find personal financing that actually fits their situation. We focus on the local lenders, credit unions, and community organizations that serve the Huntington area — not just big national programs. Whether you have a traditional credit history or not, there are real options here for you. Take your time, compare your choices, and never feel pressured to sign anything quickly.
What Is Personal Financing?
Personal financing covers any loan or line of credit that you take out as an individual — not as a registered business. In Cabell County, this most often comes up when someone needs to cover a home repair, bridge a gap between jobs, fund a small renovation on a rental property, buy tools or equipment for a solo contracting business, or manage an unexpected expense.
Personal loans can be secured (backed by something you own, like a car or home equity) or unsecured (based on your creditworthiness alone).
Interest rates, repayment terms, and eligibility rules vary widely depending on the lender and loan type.
The goal of this guide is to help you find the most affordable, transparent option available to you right here in Cabell County — not to push you toward any single product.

Forget what the banks say.
Cabell County is home to roughly 93,000 residents, with Huntington as the county seat. The local economy is shaped by healthcare (Marshall Health and Cabell Huntington Hospital are major employers), education (Marshall University), retail, and a significant skilled trades workforce. Per-capita income is below the West Virginia state average, and a meaningful share of residents are self-employed contractors or gig workers — people whose income can look 'irregular' to a traditional bank even when it is steady.
Qualification for personal financing in this area typically depends on:
- Credit score (most traditional banks want 620 or higher, but community lenders are more flexible)
- Proof of income — pay stubs, 1099s, bank statements, or tax returns all count
- Debt-to-income ratio (how much you owe vs. how much you earn)
- Residency or employment in the county or region
Importantly, you do not need a Social Security Number to access financing from every lender. Some local and community-based lenders accept an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number), which is available to immigrants regardless of status.
West Virginia's Latino and immigrant communities — concentrated in part in the Tri-State area — have more local options than many people realize.
See Section 4 for specifics.

Get your papers in order.
Getting organized before you apply saves time and stress. Here is a straightforward checklist of what most lenders in Cabell County will ask for:
Identity:
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport, or consular ID card)
- Social Security Number or ITIN
Proof of Income (bring as many as apply to you):
- Last 2–3 pay stubs (for W-2 employees)
- Last 2 years of federal tax returns (especially for self-employed or 1099 workers)
- Recent bank statements (last 3–6 months) showing consistent deposits
- Profit-and-loss statement if you run a solo contracting business
Residency:
- A utility bill, lease agreement, or mortgage statement with your Cabell County address
Existing Debts:
- Statements for any current loans, credit cards, or lines of credit
For Secured Loans:
- Vehicle title (for auto-secured loans)
- Mortgage statement or recent appraisal (for home equity products)
Community lenders and CDFIs are often more flexible about documentation than big banks — if you are missing something, ask before assuming you don't qualify.

Don't fall into these traps.
Cabell County, like many Appalachian communities, has historically been targeted by high-cost financial products. Here is how to protect yourself:
Common in Huntington, these arrangements can cost two to three times the retail price of an item over the life of the contract. If you need appliances or furniture, a small personal loan from a credit union is almost always cheaper.
These almost always come with triple-digit APRs. West Virginia's 31% cap means a licensed lender cannot charge this — if an online lender does, they are either unlicensed or structuring the product to evade state law.
Some title lenders operate near the West Virginia–Kentucky border. Handing over your vehicle title for a short-term loan puts your transportation at serious risk. Avoid these.
If a lender asks you to pay a fee before receiving your loan, walk away. Legitimate lenders deduct fees from your loan or charge them at closing — they do not ask for upfront cash or prepaid cards.
No legitimate lender will tell you the offer expires in hours or pressure you to decide immediately. Take your time. Compare at least two or three offers.
In West Virginia, you have the right to take a loan agreement home and review it before signing. If a lender refuses to let you do this, that is a serious warning sign.
Some tax preparation offices in the Huntington area offer refund anticipation products with high fees. Free tax prep through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, available locally through United Way) can help you get your refund without the fees.
Everything below is set by West Virginia, and it reads the same in every county in it. The 9 marks above are this county's own doors — who opens one is decided by them, not by the state.
The rules where you are.
West Virginia has its own consumer lending laws that offer you important protections. Here is what you should know as a Cabell County borrower:
West Virginia law caps interest rates on consumer loans at 31% APR for most personal loans. This is significantly stricter than many other states and helps protect against extremely high-cost lending.
West Virginia is one of a small number of states that has effectively banned traditional payday loans. Storefront payday lenders are not legally permitted to operate under West Virginia law. If someone presents a product that looks and works like a payday loan, be cautious — it may be operating outside the law.
Any company making consumer loans in West Virginia must be licensed by the West Virginia Division of Financial Institutions. You can verify a lender's license at: wvdfi.wv.gov. Always check before signing.
Some online lenders attempt to skirt state law by claiming they are based on tribal land or in another state. West Virginia courts and regulators have pushed back on this, but it is still a risk. If an online lender's rate exceeds 31% APR, that is a red flag regardless of where they claim to be chartered.
You are entitled to a written loan agreement in plain language before signing anything. Never accept verbal-only terms.
This state law gives you the right to cancel certain credit agreements within a defined window and protects you against unfair collection practices. If you feel a lender has violated your rights, contact the West Virginia Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-368-8808.
The short version.

Here is the short version of everything in this guide:

If you need personal financing in Cabell County, start local. Your best options are community credit unions like Hoops Credit Union or Marshall University Federal Credit Union, or a CDFI like Mountain CAP or Self-Help Credit Union. These organizations know the Huntington-area economy, are more flexible with self-employed or 1099 income, and in some cases will work with ITIN holders.
- 03
West Virginia law is actually on your side — payday loans are banned, interest rates are capped at 31%, and every lender must be licensed with the state. Use that protection. Verify any lender at wvdfi.wv.gov before you sign.
- 04
If you are unsure where to start, call United Way of the River Cities (211) or the SBA West Virginia District Office. Both can point you to vetted, local options at no cost.
