No agenda

We do not ask for your name, your email, or your number. Nothing on this page changes based on who you are.

Based here vs. serves here

A door is headquartered here when its head office sits inside the county line. The rest are based elsewhere and keep a branch you can walk into. We list both, and we label which is which.

Where this comes from

Every institution on this page comes from public federal data — the CDFI Fund certified list (Aug 2026), NCUA credit union data (Mar 2026), and the SBA microloan intermediary list (Sep 2026) — plus a short national tier we verified by hand. We refresh each list as its agency publishes. No listing is paid.

THE GUIDE

Clay County is rural West Virginia, where traditional banks often turn down small business owners and solo contractors. This guide points you to real local options: community development lenders, credit unions, and state programs that understand the land and the work. You don't need perfect credit or a pile of collateral to start.

It's a relationship, not a rejection.

When a bank says no, it's not saying no to you. It's saying no to their checklist. A loan officer in Charleston or Huntington never walked your property, never met you at the feed store, never heard about the job you're about to land.

Local CDFIs and credit unions here in Clay County (or serving it) do that work.

They know that a contractor's real credit is the jobs lined up and the reputation in town. Start with people who lend to people they can see.

Forget what the banks say.

Banks will tell you that you need a 650 credit score, a years of tax returns, and collateral worth 125% of the loan. That's one way to lend.

But credit unions and community development lenders use a different yardstick: cash flow, character, and what you're building.

If you're a contractor with work lined up, a farmer with season ahead, or a small-business owner with customers, you have collateral the banks don't see. Don't let one rejection become your truth. The next door might open.

THE LAND AROUND ITWest Virginia, at last light.

Four things. Get them in order.

  1. 01Know your actual cash flow

Track what comes in and goes out for 30 days, even roughly.

  2. 02Gather your documents

Business license, tax ID, phone bills, proof of address, proof of income (1099s, bank statements, customer contracts).

  3. 03Call the SBA district office or a local CDFI and ask what programs exist right now.

    Things change.

  4. 04Be clear about what you need the money for and when you can pay it back.

Lenders want to hear a plan, not hope.

WHAT TO AVOID

Don't fall into these traps.

Rural West Virginia sees payday lenders and predatory online loans. They are fast and they are expensive. A $500 payday loan costs $85 in two weeks; if you roll it over, you're paying $2,200 a year in fees alone. Avoid them like you'd avoid a bad road in winter. Second: don't sign anything that says you owe your tax refund or future paycheck. That's a debt trap. Third: don't let someone promise a loan for an upfront fee. Real lenders take their money when the loan funds. If they want cash now, walk away.

PAYDAY TRAP

Two-week loans at 400% annual interest; one roll-over turns $500 into $2,200 owed within a year.

UPFRONT FEE SCAM

Anyone asking for cash before you get the loan is a predator; real lenders take their fee from the loan itself.

TAX REFUND ASSIGNMENT

Signing away your tax refund or future paycheck as collateral is a debt trap that follows you for years.

The rules where you are.

None of this is set by a lender. West Virginia sets it, and it applies the same in every county in the state — which is why it is worth knowing before you knock on any of the doors above.

  • STATE INCOME TAX2.36% – 5.12%

What the state takes off what you earn, before anyone works out what payment you can carry.

  • SALES TAX6.0% state · 0.55% avg local

What you pay on top of every purchase. On a small loan for a repair or a tool, this is a real part of the total.

  • MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME$54K

Half the households in the state earn less than this. A lot of the programs above use that number to decide who qualifies.

  • COST OF LIVING87.7

National index, where 100 is the country's average. Under 100 means your money goes further here.
